I just did a clean install of Arch. I installed the latest version of VirtualBox PUSE from the AUR, which is version 3. I setup a virtual machine and installed Windows Vista Ultimate(i have a valid license). I plugged in my Ipod Touch and the VirtualBox settings config recognized it and I was able to make a usb filter for it. I also made a blank filter to enable all usb devices. I downloaded and installed the latest iTunes, version 8.2.1.6.
The problem is that whenever I plug in my iPod, it's unavailable in the usb devices list in VirtualBox. With the extra filter, I can select and deselect any other device, but the iPod is always grayed out and unchecked. Running lsusb doesn't show it connect in linux, but VirtualBox knows it's there, it just isn't connecting. I had this working with VirtualBox 2.2 and with the iPhone OS ver 2.0.
Also, I can't get iTunes to install with wine either. I can't paste the error msg at the moment, but it has something to do with '"WixSchedFirewallExceptionUninstall" returned 1603'.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Try using virtualbox_bin-2 in AUR instead. My friend's ipod touch worked fine in VB 2.2.4, but would no longer mount in my Windows 7 VM after I upgraded to 3.0. Downgrading solved the problem.

Same problem here.
Trying to sync my iPod touch 1st gen firmware 3.0 using both
virtualbox_bin 3.0.4 and then trying as suggested with
virtualbox_bin-2 2.2.4-47978 from AUR, but NO GO.
The iPod is listed under the USB devices but it's gray and cannot be selected.
Any ideas?
EDIT: BTW, if you issue the command
VBoxManage list usbhost
It shows that the device is
Current State: Unavailable
But I must say that any other USB device as pen drives or whatever is working as expected!

Now I am able to connect my ipod touch 1st Gen (3.0 firmware). to the Virtual XP machine. I even upgrade my firware version from 3.0 to 3.1.1.
The VirtualBox upgrade to version 3.0.6-2 did the trick!!!
