Edit: I see... He looked at these packages:
alsa-utils, cups, emacs, firefox, gcc, ghostscript-gpl, gimp, glibc, gnome-desktop, gnupg, httpd (apache), kdebase, linux, NetworkManager, openssh, pidgin, postgresql, python, ruby, xorg-server
So ruby and python will probably be counted as out of date, even though ruby-1.9 is in [testing] and python3 is in [community].
As far as ruby-1.9 being in [testing], I could understand him counting that as outdated. He may not have known about [community] though, considering he isn't an Arch user and all... so perhaps we should let him know?
45% seems a bit high to me still, even if he only counts those packages.

I don't get the 48%....
From what I can see, [core] has 350 packages (175 x 2 arches), 32 packages are flagged out of date, [extra] has 3982 packages with 309 flagged. Note that each package has been counted twice (i686 and x86_64) as it was easier for me that way.
So unless a lot more need flagged, at this point of time ~10% are outdated.

Should one of us send him a polite note with accurate info?

I'd say no for two reasons:
1) He has linked this thread so knows it is here
2) Does anyone really care about these numbers? When I saw the article, I immediately thought that if Arch was included, then it would be right near the top. Having the latest stable release is a goal of this distribution so if we were not at or near the top, then we we are failing at part of what makes Arch what it is...

You guys really need to e-mail me when you have shirt ideas, I only see relatively few forum threads...

Arch is now only 40% obsolete. Time to update the shirt, Dusty!

Haha! Allan you caught me.
Please double check my analysis. My crawl scripts is http://github.com/tannewt/open-source-w … os/arch.py and it defines what is "current", "future" and "experimental". Feel free to find bugs.
Love the shirt! Would like one. Maybe plug OSWatershed? ;-)

Hi Scott. Welcome to the forums!
A couple of quick comments about how you classify the repos. The only difference between the core/extra and community repos is who maintains them. The packages in the core and extra repos are maintained by the developers, while the community repo is maintained by a group called "Trusted Users" (which does overlap with the developers to a great extent). The community repo is designed to contain software that is used by a smaller portion of the user base. From a distribution point of view, these repos are all treated the same and come as enabled by default. So I would classify all the core, extra and community repos as "current".
Also, we do not distinguish between "future" and "experimental". We used to have an unstable repo for what might be considered experimental software, but it was removed due to lack of use. Now the testing repo is used for both software that is expected to go into the main repos in the immediate future and for larger experimental changes.
(I will also send this by email so feel free to reply here or there if you have any queries)

Got it thanks. I will check back here. How does arch mark things as out of date? Is it done by the community or automatically?

So would Centos be 100% obsolete?

By the community, although I have suspicions of automation for some pieces of software I maintain.

thisllub, don't know much about centos. Allan, awesome. Any interest in using OSWatershed for this too?

It is a possibility. When this was discussed on the mailing list, there was talk about a script for looking for package updates.

@Themaister not only maintainers. you guys are doing awesome work by flagging out of date packages.

Who else finds it funny that the "only 45% obsolete" t-shirt is now obsolete?

Arch is awesome. And Pacman is too. So simple to update and install.

I don't get it why arch is #6 at future distro @__@
