I am running xfce4 and gdm and have installed gnome-screensaver. How can i get it to work automatically? I can us it to lock the screen by issuing a command, or activate it via the command line, but it wont work on its own...suggestions?

UPDATE:
I have found that if i run "gnome-screensaver" from a shell, it should start a daemon. I get this error though
** (gnome-screensaver:8559): WARNING **: Failed to get session presence proxy: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SessionManager': no such name
Thoughts?

UPDATE:
i have posted the complete output of gnome-screensaver when i run gnome-screensaver --no-daemon --debug (yes i know i must keep the shell open then for the program to work) http://pastebin.com/m485731a5
i have also noticed that even though i remove xscreensaver.desktop from the /etc/xdg/autostart/ and from /home/myname/.config/autostart/ but somehow xscreensaver is triggered and found running upon startup. anyone have any hints?

Look at /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc and change this line :
if test $UID -gt 0 -a -z "$VNCSESSION"; then
if test x"`which xscreensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then
xscreensaver -no-splash &
elif test x"`which gnome-screensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then
gnome-screensaver &
fi
fi
to
if test $UID -gt 0 -a -z "$VNCSESSION"; then
if test x"`which gnome-screensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then
gnome-screensaver &
elif test x"`which xscreensaver 2>/dev/null`" != x""; then
xscreensaver -no-splash &

ahh. good that removed xscreensaver from starting. However, i am still having trouble with gnome-screensaver. it start upon boot, however if i kill it or dont have it start at boot and try and run it later from the command line, it still spits out this warning:
** (gnome-screensaver:9363): WARNING **: Failed to get session presence proxy: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SessionManager': no such name
PS. sorry my previous link to pastebin was goofed, i have fixed it now.

so anyone know what that error means?

according to this link http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs … 67071.html gnome-session must be installed? I know that isnt a requirement since other distros ie. crunchbang use gnome-screensaver without gnome. hummmmmm
EDIT: More news. looks like there is definately some dependency on gnome-session:
