xorg-server upgrade broke my system

I've just upgraded and xorg locks up the system with a black screen and the mouse cursor. Cursor doesn't move, system doesn't respond. Probably a problem with catalyst drivers...

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

The new xorg-server broke my system too (xfce4 desktop environment was broke). I was lucky enough to have the old version in my var/cache/pacman/pkgs.....

Everything is back to normal now.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

No such luck I'm afraid. I installed the previous package booted from a live CD for the other time my system broke a week or so back, so it didn't get saved in the cache. Anyone have the package for 64-bit?

Edited. I'm glad someone had the xorg-server for you.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

Damn no luck. Tried 1.6.1, 1.6.0, nothing worked. Something else must be causing the problem.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

Running the latest xorg here with xf86-video-ati-git and everything kept working smoothly.

xf86-video-radeonhd has got me going for now as a temporary solution, with pathetic graphics performance.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

I manually rebuilt the catalyst 9.6 package in AUR and everything is working again fine :-)

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

So nobody else had a problem with the new xorg-server?

This is what happened to me, I upgraded these packages:

Targets (23): cairomm-1.8.2-1  device-mapper-1.02.33-1  dri2proto-2.1-1  glibmm-2.20.1-1  gstreamer0.10-base-plugins-0.10.23-2  pango-1.24.4-2
              gtk2-2.16.5-1  lib32-libdrm-2.4.12-1  libcanberra-0.14-1  libdrm-2.4.12-1  libpng-1.2.38-1  libtracker-0.6.95-1  lvm2-2.02.48-1
              mesa-7.5-1  nautilus-cd-burner-2.24.0-2  perl-5.10.0-6  perl-extutils-depends-0.302-1  python-2.6.2-5  pycairo-1.8.6-1
              python-nose-0.11.1-1  ruby-1.8.7_p174-1  thunderbird-2.0.0.22-1  xorg-server-1.6.2-1

Then I noticed right after the upgrade, that my xfce4 Thunar file manager had a new problem with the font only showing as squares (I should of took a picture before I fixed it).

So I rebuilt Thunar as well as all of it's depends and that didn't fix the font problem with Thunar. So after messing with it for a while, I installed midnight commander as a file manager, and I shut down my computer. When I shut down, I noticed that the fonts weren't showing in my xfce4 log out dialog box either (same empty squares for when a font is not recognized, so I realized that it was more than just Thunar that had become broke).

When I rebooted and logged back in, parts of my xfce4 desktop were totally broke. This is a short list of what was broke:

I had no desktop wallpaper. I still had my xfce4-panel (some plugins working), conky scripts, and my devilspie terminal working.
I had no right click menu, and no xfce4 menu in the panel so I couldn't access the settings manager (wasn't sure what the command was).
Thunar would not open from my launcher (using the exo-open command, I did not try it in the terminal so it might have just been the panel launcher?).

Anyway, I still had Firefox working so I went through the forums to see if anybody else had a problem with recent upgrades when I saw your thread..... and since I had an older version of xorg-server in my cache I uploaded it, rebooted, and all of my problems were fixed.

..... so I am wondering why xorg-server only broke my system..... I haven't seen any posts in the Arch forums that have had the same problems? One last added detail, I use the official NVIDIA driver from the NVIDIA site, so maybe something wasn't compatible?

I have noticed that fonts as squares problem too on the logout but everything was fine right after I did the next login.

Same thing that I explained above. Just the use of 'pacman -Rd' and 'pacman -Sf'.

It's only a pain for me because I have to reboot into run-level 3, then remove my NVIDIA driver and nvidia-utils, then I can force install libgl, after all of that I can finally build xorg-server from source (and a few other packages that require libgl as a makedepend or depend). Then after it's installed I can use 'pacman -Rd libgl' and then install my NVIDIA driver and my nvidia-utils again. Then I can boot back into a run-level 5 and everything is working good.

But all of that can be a hassle, so sometimes I just use the Arch binary for xorg-server (and other packages that need libgl).

I'm not sure if it was something specific about my system that caused such a problem with xfce4. I have also noticed a strange xfce4 related error in my dmesg:

xfce4-settings-[2600]: segfault at 8 ip 00007f2dfb3ea3bb sp 00007fff2861b490 error 4 in libSM.so.6.0.0[7f2dfb3e8000+7000]

..... I guess I can try to install xorg-server again and see if the same thing happens. (since I have the old working version in my cache)

Well...I'm using xfce4.6 with the latest Nvidia driver (185.18.14) on x86_64 Arch, no problems after xorg server upgrade.

Yeah, it might just be my system. I have the whole thing built from source (using some questionable flags), and a custom kernel, as well as the official NVIDIA driver from the nvidia page (not the Arch nvidia driver). I guess I'll give it another attempt tonight, maybe I'll have better luck. Thanks for the info.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

I have problems with my 64bit install after the xserver update. It installed some other stuff too, didn't pay attention .. will try to downgrade all it did. It gets weird every time I start a gl app, for example glxgears, virtualbox etc: sometimes a totally black screen with a cursor, I can ALT TAB to other apps and the problem is gone until I ALT TAB back to the gl app. With virtualbox started I get weird inverted almost coloring. I am using the opensource ati drivers on an xpress1100 graphics card, no problems until now.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

I just reinstalled xorg-server and it finally worked properly. I'm not sure what fixed the problem. I built it from source this time using libgl, then I reinstalled my NVIDIA driver and nvidia-utils-beta. I'm not sure why it worked this time.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

Had this problem yesterday, rebuilding catalyst and catalyst-utils fixed it for me - BUT it's still really annoying that when this happens it results in a complete lockup, for the love of god at least dump me back into console.

I was a little extra annoyed because the hard reset somehow kicked all my bios settings back to the defaults also.

Re: xorg-server upgrade broke my system

I guess we will only see less serious lockups when X stops running as root I guess, but there is still some time to go before that happens I think.
