So I got X up and running, but now I'm having trouble getting the gnome desktop to function.
the gdm login screen works perfectly, but upon user login I receive an error message stating "System has no xclients file. starting up in xterm......" and then I'm working on xterm which is stuck up in the lefthand corner of the screen (and has really bad coloring for the text. tough to read) How can I get the desktop up and running?
I'm almost there though! this has been a damn fun project so far!

Are you sure you installed GNOME and not just GNOME-extras?

oh....silly me. I thought gnome-extras was gnome with extras, not just the extras for gnome. oops

I still have the "System has no Xclients file ..." problem.
I have gnome and gnome-extras installed.
Before installing gnome I installed KDE (if this could be a problem).
What can I do?
Thank you.

Ok, I found it: there might be some problem with my home directory, corrupted profile files?
I created a new user and the new user logged in GDM correctly.
Thank you!

Thanks.

Hi Lucapaga, I just now moved from KDE back to GNOME and experienced the same problem. Make sure you changed the session from Xclients to GNOME. Apparently, at least for me, GDM doesn't default to GNOME after KDE already being installed or something. Hope it works, or that you even see this.
