Arch is amazing!

I Just wanted to show my appreciation for Arch linux and the strong community behind it. I have been a Slackware user for a very long time because I wanted a system that could be customized to my personal needs. However I recently ran across Arch linux & decided to give it a try; and i must say, I am VERY impressed!
impressed enough to convert from Slackware altogether! Over the years I have probably tried hundreds of distros, each with there own quirks and pre-packaged options. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, but for an advanced user it can feel like being trapped in a box.
Arch linux is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest versions of Linux it has ever been my pleasure to use!

Re: Arch is amazing!

I can say the same..

I just found arch a week ago (after years as a fedora/ubuntu junkie), and it's going to spoil me silly. I've already decided to never install any of the others again.

This distro is epic! (Especially openbox/conky setups tongue)

Re: Arch is amazing!

I must agree also. Arch is awesome. It is "simple" and easy to configure. I am using it to write Python scripts and so far I am happy with it. I am getting the results that I want without any problem. I will try Haskell later.

It's the same fealing for me, I have been also a distro nomad and I must say that since I discovered Arch I don't have any intentions to change again.

Re: Arch is amazing!

Arch is my weapon of choice.
I was so happy when I found it.
It's odd.. there are so few OS's that let you do what you want to do with your hardware.
I mean.. Technically any linux can be customised, but for some reason when I start mucking around with other distros the way I tend to they tend to get unstable. But because with arch you get things pretty much "out of the box" you can tweak and things don't break. Its like getting one of those Tomika cars. You know the moulded plastic ones with the little electric motors. All the important parts are there, but they are in pieces. And if you know what your doing, you can change the way it goes together.

Im ranting now.. but damn it.. It's just that amazing!

Re: Arch is amazing!

After coming from a Slackware-like distro I really fell in love with the kiss mentality here.  Welcome to Arch!

Re: Arch is amazing!

Yes.
I have tried several distros before arch, such as fedora, opensuse, mandriva, redhat9, ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, freebsd, zenwalk for about 2 years, but found none of them satisfied me. Since my PC is an old machine (Celeron 1.7G + DDR400 1G + nvidia TNT2), I am more aware of its speed. Zenwalk is the fastest among them, but with few software. Ubuntu has lots of software, but with a slow speed.
Finally, about 1 year ago, I found archlinux on distrowatch.com. It lays 20 on top distro list. Everyone said it's small and fast, and easy to prepare. I like easy, so I tried. It is indeed a very good distro.
Now with LXDE developed by Taiwannese, my PC is very good at speed. Good arch and LXDE !

Re: Arch is amazing!

Arch actually was my first introduction to Linux, back in '03. Hell, it's been the only distribution I've ever truly used; the rest I was only trying out. I imagine it's been sort of like attempting to cheat, when you have a perfect ten as a wife.

I know my 'registered' date on the forums is much more recent than '03. However, I'm one of those perma-lurker types. Took me four years before I registered. Probably take me another ten to reach 100 posts.

Edit: I JUST found the first Arch iso I burned sitting in a spindle: Nova o.O!

Re: Arch is amazing!

I installed Arch a couple months ago with the help of this forum. Sold that PC. I had a friend guide me through a second install a week ago. This time was better and I've been very impressed. Arch makes me learn the terminal which I enjoy, once I know the right words. smile

I once used sidux a year ago, but their forum wasn't as friendly and their updates broke too often. Updates at Arch have been very smooth.

The more I use Arch, the more I like it !

Re: Arch is amazing!

Arch Linux is 30 - 50 % faster from all other distros I tried so far. Not to mention his configure abilities. For the fist time I really feel that I want and can contribute to some linux distro.

Re: Arch is amazing!

Because arch is used around the world I'd say we're neigbours big_smile

Well I'm one of the distro hoppers who used to reinstall linux as soon as one of my favourites (around 5) distro's hits a new release, ever since arch I haven't switched to another distro, I don't even reinstall arch itself big_smile
