Improving performance (?)

Hey,

I don't mean to imply I'm not happy with the performance so far...! tongue but I can't hurt to try some stuff. I have an Intel Q6600 CPU and 4GB of ram and I run an openbox-session with tint2, conky and a few programs I use really often (Pidgin, Firefox, Transmission, Sonata+MPD, VLC, VirtualBox, Eclipse, Tomboy Notes, Nautilus, Terminator and Scite).

I thought I would be a good idea to keep more things cached in ram, so I looked at:
1) Ramdisk (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ramdisk)
2) Tmpfs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMPFS)
3) 'Preload' (http://sourceforge.net/projects/preload/, http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=2626)

But I'm a bit lost, what should I try? Are the better things I didn't mention? What do you think will achieve the best results? Guides/Tutorials/Tweaks/Suggestions for using my system's resources to gain performance?

I should mention, I'm fairly new to Linux and so far I love Arch (and bash and all the conf files I have to play with). I haven't tried a lot of software so far, so please, feel free to recommend lightweight alternatives / non-DE dependent / really-good-at-one-task programs. big_smile

Thanks!

Have a look at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=41168 for lightweight apps.
