[SOLVED] Openbravo and Mysql

I can get openbravo installed using apache derby and postgre database but i am having trouble getting it run with MySQL database.  I have downloaded mysql-connector-java-5.1.8-bin.jar but i get the following message when i try to connect. 

com.openbravo.basic.BsicException:

Cannot connect to database. Database not available.



com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc.4.CommunicationsException:

Communications link failure



Last packet sent oto the server was 0 ms ago.

java.net.ConnectException:

any ideas?
