Ok, so my dad gave me a laptop. It's great, but it runs on Archlinux. I have absolutely no clue how to use it.
Could somebody please walk me through installing Firefox 3.51? I downloaded firefox-3.5.1.tar.bz2 from the website, but I don't know what to do with the files. ![]()

It said I couldn't install unless I was root! Thank you, though. ![]()

Which is quite normal. If your dad set up the laptop right you either have the root password yourself or access to root privileges through sudo. If not, bug your dad. He needs to fix it

You should ask your dad how you can be root (it needs a password). And he will probably show you how to use pacman. You can't install anything without both. Unless he set up sudo for you. You might try "sudo -E pacman -Sy" and give your password if asked. If that works then you can use pacman with sudo. If you get "bash: sudo: command not found" - well, you need dad to give you the root password.
*edit* You beat me to it, B. :-)

Yeah, my problem is though that even if I wanted one of those, I wouldn't know how to install it. I got the laptop with Archlinux installed already.

There's this new thing designed for situations like this.....
It's called reading. ![]()
Moving this to Newbie Corner, with the expectation that you will try answering your own questions before asking here again, by using the wiki, searching here on the forum, googling, etc.
