I would use this... but I'm one for aesthetics, and this just looks darn ugly! If there was even a way to recompile it to change the theme I would do it, but as it is, its an eyesore on my desktop. Not trying to bash you, you have done some great work! Just letting out this.

At first I didn't care much since I was using an old version but right now i'm using the most recent version.
My issues with gmm:
*insane amount of errors in BASH/Console output: wrong decoder, **** error, FLAC check 0x023020 but the .flac plays just fine
*refuses to play certain .flacs, during a playlist unlist I manually double click each track
*Locks up about 40-60% of the time i'm using gmm on a day, have to kill the process everytime
Please be aware there's NOTHING wrong with my lossless files (all properly ripped EAC and checksummed), plays just fine in foobar or winamp
You want a log of the DEBUG?
EDIT: I'm listening to a score by Harry Gregson williams, track 03 just ended, 2 minutes later nothing.. just pure silence... checked my system (alt-tab) yup gmm crashed again, here's the console output:

This happens a lot regardless of the .flac file
To quote from a related topic:
I think this is a ffmpeg bug. It's the ffmpeg library that is spitting this message out. If you remove the xineplug_decode_ff.so from /usr/lib/xine/*, then it will use the libflac decoder instead. Let me know if this works or not.
The only downside of this solution is that you may lose some of the supported fileformats supported by ffmpeg.
Will report back as soon as possible, thanks for the quick prompt mr dev

Although I don't mind the current look at all, I can see why people feel it is outdated. Perhaps some day FOX will support a themeable interface, but until then some of the interface elements could just get a new paint job:

I can happily say it's working like a charm now minus a few crashes and a few "lockups" wan't me to start debugging?

If you can debug that would be great. Just do a:
./configure --enable-debug
make clean
make
gdb src/musicmanager

Lol, I quit Google Music Manager and then loaded it up again for some reason in compact-mode, for the life of me I can't figure out how to get out of it.

GooglesGuy, what's new on version 0.10.5? The ChangeLog on GoogleCode hasn't been updated.

There were some minor build script updates needed for people building binary packages. Other than that, its exactly the same as 0.10.4.

Thanks for the help, lol, tried just about everything. On a side note, I discovered this happens if GMM is minimized in the tray and I quit it from there, when I restart it it will load in compact-mode.

It's actually a bug which I have been to lazy to fix. I've changed the way GMM remembers its previous state in the development version, so it will be definitely be gone by then.

Excellent app. Does most of the things Rhythmbox does while being a gazillion times faster, so that's okay.
Two questions:
- What's the way to create your own colour scheme? I played around with openbox/gtk themes and I think that I could match the looks of gmm better if I changed the colours...I know it's possible from gmm itself but apparently I can't input hexadecimal values.
- I'd like to change the icon, both in the system tray and in the panel...no offence, but the little yellow goggle guy just...odd...:P
Great work!

Do you only have the hexadecimal values, or do you have some other color setting panel from openbox/gtk? In the latter case you could use the color picker to copy the colors directly. Worst case you would have to change the colors in ~/.foxrc/musicmanager. They're kind of spread out, a couple under [SETTINGS] and a few under [colors].

The system tray icons are baked into the executable. You would need to compile gmm yourself and replace the specific icons you would like to change in the icons subdirectory of the source tarball. Also you probably need to replace "gmm.png" under /usr/share/icons/hicolor/*
Good luck!

I converted the hexadecimal values to RGB on a webpage, so that worked. The result is darker than the rest of my apps, but it blends in.

Oooh...yes I tried changing the gmm icon, didn't work...don't think I'll start recompiling. I like the ease of updates via pacman.
But thanks for the answers I think I'll keep using this. Absolutely love the speed of it.

Final question...I let conky display what song Rhythmbox was playing. Would this be possible in gmm too?

Not yet. I've been thinking about providing a dbus MPRIS interface (http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se/wiki/MPRIS) to gmm, so basic information can be extracted.
(a small rant is following)
I would have implemented this spec already if it weren't for the fact that every damn utilitity that likes to extract track information, polls every so many seconds to check if the player has changed tracks, instead of relying on track change notifications that most players provide via DBUS. (conkey also polls btw, pidgin musictracker as well).

Hey! Great player! For a long time I wasn't able to find anything better than Rhythmbox (Banshee is out of the question - Mono, yuck! Same goes for Amarok - just don't like QT apps), but then Goggles came along.
Loads fast as hell, searches fast as hell (magnitudes faster than Rhythmbox), submits to last.fm... that's basically what I need.
But I have two things that nag me:
1) When importing music playback stops. So for example I download an album and proceed to refresh my database to include it in there. Playback stops when I hit "Import" in the "import music" dialog. That completely sucks. Then I'm left with the silence for a minute or so while my library refreshes. Sucks.
2) Deleted files continue to persist in the db. I could probably hack a Perl script that does some purging of 'dead tracks' from the db, but surely there's some more civilized method to do that? Have I missed it? O_o

Unfortunately, that is currently not possible due to the way xine fiddles with locale settings. Once xine gets fixed, or whenever I've finished my own playback engine, it can easily be enabled. It basically has to do with float to string conversions and locale conventions.

- Go to [Music]->[Sync Folder]
- Select desired directory that needs to be synced.
- Check "Remove tracks that have been deleted from disk" under the [Sync] tab. Also deselect any undesired operations as well.

Thanks for answering GogglesGuy!
I can live with the first issue, it's not that big of a deal.
As for the second.. Thanks for the advice! I seem to completely have missed the "Sync Folder" functionality -- or more accurately, I just thought it had something to do with syncing a music folder across multiple hard drives or something, and never opened the dialog to see what's there Thanks a lot! GMM is now 99% complete in my book

is there a way to integrate song rating? like 1-5 stars? that is the only thing i miss...otherwise, it is my favorite music player/manager out there hands down!

I've worked on that some time ago: I actually had implemented a (0=unrated) / 1-5 star rating system. I still need to finish it. Hopefully, some future release will have it.
In other news, the October 2009 issue of Linux Format (#123) has Goggles Music Manager featured in its Hotpicks sections. Or so I heard. Haven't seen it myself yet, since B&N still carries the september issue.

I've just installed it and from the looks of it, gmm will be my new default player. Thanks for this great piece of software.
+1 for being fast with a fast startup
+1 for quick library import
+1 for easy multimedia key usage
+1 for good sound quality
+1 for configurable interface
+1 for good resource management/lightweight
I have a question about the equalizer though. I've used a variety of music players (rhythmbox, banshee, amarok...) and most have equalizers that change the volume of the range of frequencies specified. For instance, when the equalizer is flat, everything sounds just fine. When I move the bottom 3 frequency ranges up in banshee, my subwoofers (yes I have subwoofers in my headset) make my headset vibrate enough that I can feel it with my hands from the outside. However, in gmm, even if I turn all of them up 100%, not much happens. I'm not a software dev nor am I a sound tech so I dont even know if that is correct functionality, but would you be able to clue me into something I should be doing or is it just the software? Whatever the case, it's still a great program that gives me great sound. Thanks.
