Installing NVIDIA GeForce

Hi All,

I'm an Ubuntu to Arch convert wannabe-Its my first time installing arch.
First I have gone through the basic http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide step by step. I get stuck ad the Nvidia and Xorg stage.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT

Tried with fresh install pacman and system update -Sy pacman and -Su then according to the guide I installed and ran

pacman -S libgl
pacman -S xorg
pacman -S hal xf86-input-evdev
pacman -S mesa
pacman -Ss xf86-video-nv
pacman -S nvidia-96xx
nvidia-xconfig

X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Screen goes blank nothing there

Tried again with arch fresh install pacman and system update -Sy pacman and -Su

pacman -S libgl
pacman -S xorg
downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run
ran sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run
nvidia-xconfig
X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Screen blank system unresponsive

Here is my xorg.conf

I also have
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal)
in /etc/rc.conf

I also tried nopat on the grub

Can anyone shed any light on this? There are ACPI problems but I'm not sure if these are the sole cause. Has anyone managed to install Gefore 9 series cards? I've been trying with fresh installs all weekends and may have to give up on Arch. Any hints would be appreciated smile
Thanks !!

Re: Installing NVIDIA GeForce

Have you tried just running

 startx

And see if it runs.  I would also probably move the xorg.conf somewhere else and see how that goes also, as it isn't technically needed anymore.

Re: Installing NVIDIA GeForce

archdev wrote:

They are. There are 3 nvidia packages available:
nvidia: Newest drivers (more or less.) - This is the package you'd want for your modern 9500.
nvidia-173xx: Slightly older drivers for cards that are too old to be supported by the newest ones.
nvidia-96xx: Even older drivers for even older cards.

Also, for future reference - libgl conflicts with nvidia drivers, so you'd don't need it (and it will be removed by nvidia packages) and xf86-video-nv is the open-source nvidia driver, which you also don't need.

Otherwise, glad you seem to have sorted this out.

As far as #X -config not working...there is a note about it in the Beginner's Guide.  That threw me for a loop for several hours this weekend when I reinstalled-until I went back and read the updated Guide, rather than the old paper copy I have here.

Re: Installing NVIDIA GeForce

Thanks,

This issue has had me going for hours. First Arch install....umm 3rd try wink.....following the Beginners Guide, back and forth between sections to see what I've missed.

I had startx working but tried installing xfce the other day and had problems, so went and played with config files, then ended up reinstalling.

Lets see how we go now. smile

Edit: Awesome!! Works wonders smile

I don't think the Beginners Guide makes it clear that those errors aren't fatal. A simple nudge to the next section might be handy.
