lost access to my usb printer

I am not sure when this happened, since I don't
print something everyday. My guess is it has something
to do with kernel 2.6.10 or udev or both.

Anyway, cups is looking for the printer to be at
/dev/usb/lp0. One problem with that -- there is no
/dev/usb anything. No such directory.

Re: lost access to my usb printer

I don't know why, but when I booted back into
the 2.4.28 kernel the /dev/usb/* stuff came back.

Plus I got my 'beep' back. I mean the beep sound that is
made when gdm starts up, for example.

Re: lost access to my usb printer

Maybe you forgot to add USB-(printer) support into your 2.6.10-kernel.

A bus station is where a bus stops.
A train station is where a train stops.
On my desk I have a workstation.

Re: lost access to my usb printer

I used the stock kernel in the Arch kernel26 package,
which includes modules for usb. The usb modules were
loaded -- udev just did not create a 'device' for them.

Anyway, I have solved the problem by temporarily giving up
on the 2.6.x kernel and udev. With the 2.4.x kernels and devfsd
everything has always worked perfectly.
