Have you enabled all the repos in your mirror list?
The errors after -Syu may provide the clues that you need: if you post them here it will help people assist you.

Using pacman -S openbox should work since the openbox package exists.
Since pacman -Syu gives you errors, I guess your mirrors aren't setup correctly. Try to install any other package to see if it works, preferably one in [extra].
If this is the problem, see this page to see if the extra repo is enabled, then see your mirrorlist (/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist).
Hope this helps
Edit: someone beat me to it. I need to make my posts shorter, and type faster

The problem is with your mirror list: as FunkNapkin suggests, follow the repositories instructions in the wiki and you should be fine...

could someone kind show me how to do this, or get me in the right direction, as this is my first time using linux.

Read this section of the Beginner's Guide carefully:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … acman.conf
It will step you through everything you need to get your mirror list set up correctly; basically - it should look like the example given:
[core]
# Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[extra]
# Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[community]
# Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
Stick with it: it's not difficult. ;-)

okay i read through it, but im kind of confused. do i add the server i want to use where it says # add your preferred servers here, they will be used first, in /etc/pacman.conf

No - just make sure the repos you want are uncommented (core, extra & community): this only points to the server list at /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist - that is where you enter you local mirror server address.
Does that help?

okay what do you mean when you say uncomment ?
and okay that it points to the mirrorlist makes sense, but how do i show it which servers to use in mirrorlist. i cut all the lines from everywhere except for usa. do i uncomment them by deletign the # in front of the server?
Offline
Uncomment - make sure there is no # at the beginning of the line.
The servers in the mirror list should also be uncommented (at least one of them anyway - so pacman knows where to look for the repos).
(I only use one server - it's all we have here in NZ...)

okay well how do i uncomment the repos core extra and community? im guessing in /etc/pacman.conf but where and how in there

Edit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, not pacman.conf
Pacman parses the list top down, so make sure you have a usable mirror on top.
Also take a look at http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html

I only get that error message when my internet connection isn't set up. I'm positive that's the problem.

i was actually thinking i wasnt connecting to the internet in arch, obviously its not down since im posting here, so it must not be configured right in arch. could someone help me do that?

Actually I think I have had the same trouble with the gatech.edu mirror. I just commented it out in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist (or you could simply delete the offending line).

Yes it would need to be configured, look to the beginner's guide on the wiki if you need to learn how to do that. (plus lots of other things you will need to do)
