alsa sudenly won't share outputs and PCM missing from Alsamixer

don't know why, as I am away from this box for weeks at a time, but since my return and upgrade...things don't share sound usage.   I use an onboard soundcard of some sort...but am not wililng to live with them not sharing.  Everything works fine except this.  And everything worked fine before I came home.  Any help would be great!

Alsamixer shows no PCM...which is what my mpd.conf was set to to share sound.

Ever since ALSA became a kernel module, if I start my PC with my USB microphone plugged in this exact thing happens. I never bothered to find a solution beyond "don't do that".
