HOWTO: Crash-free Oxygen-style OpenOffice in KDE

If you have problems with OpenOffice.org crashing and/or being unbearably ugly when you are using KDE, do the following:

1.) Add the line

export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome

to e.g. /etc/rc.local

2.) Install gtk-qt-engine from the extra repository.

3.) Install gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme from the AUR.

4.) Open KDE's System Settings and choose "kde4-oxygen" as the GTK Style in Appearance/GTK Styles and Fonts

Done.

OO.org will not look perfect, but very acceptable. A screenshot for all those who want something visible:

Edit: There is a new style on the AUR, called oxygen-molecule-theme. It is quite nice as well. Some think it looks better than gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme, which might well be the case. To try this theme, follow the same steps, only install oxygen-molecule-theme at step 2.

Re: HOWTO: Crash-free Oxygen-style OpenOffice in KDE

I guess that'll work, although it'd be really nice if the Qt4 theme (gtk-qt-engine's) would work right with OOo and not screw with the toolbars and stuff. Oh well, I was about to post to find a solution, then I found this smile EDIT: Hmm, it seems other GTK apps look a little nicer too. EDIT: On my other box I use the Obsidian Coast KDE color scheme, so it's a major eyesore on that box on all GTK apps, although I could live with it in just OOo, I jsut don't want it in Gimp and Firefox etc. Is there a way to make all my GTK apps use the regular Qt4 style but have OOo use the oxygen style (or have the GTK oxygen style use the same color scheme).

Hmm, if you want to do this in only Open Office but comtinue to use GTK-QT-engine (or another theme) in other GTK apps, take a look at this: http://www.rebelzero.com/fixes/openoffi … buntu-804/ The directory is in /opt/openoffice instead of wherever it says it is though just keep that in mind, otherwise, it works fine with me smile

ah @doorknob60 it's the Qt theme that makes my toolbar invisible?

Yea, only Ooo writer makes kde toolbar invisible/ugly.

I don't quite understand. What is that "kde toolbar" and how does Ooo make it ugly?

Re: HOWTO: Crash-free Oxygen-style OpenOffice in KDE

If you use openoffice and the gtk-kde package which allow you to have your kde theme in gtk apps
the icons in OOo will be invisible with the default theme ( I didn't change the theme yet I will confirm this)

Edit : this is confirmed, choosing the qt4 or "my kde" style in the gtk-kde makes OOo icons invisible, while choosing Rayleigh will display them normally (such an ugly theme ...)

You have to wonder why a suite as large as OO is actually regressing in its cross-compatability when most others seem to have moved forward.

While this is true and well-known, this thread was about a _working_ solution to this very problem. The only issue with the proposed solution was that it does not honor changes to the color-scheme.

To put it clearly: If you use standard colors, OOo works with the solution proposed, including icons. Also, it is pretty, unlike e.g. with the Raleigh style.

Re: HOWTO: Crash-free Oxygen-style OpenOffice in KDE

Hi, I see myself a little late for the ball, but
to me this thing happens only if openoffice is started off from open-file context menu. If I open office and then open a file through menu, the thing with the icons is gone.
