Hi,
After upgrade to KDE 4.3 Amarok doesn't work properly. It launches, but doesn't play music. It's probably related to gstreamer which probably messed up devices in Multimedia in System Settings... I installed phonon-xine, but there's no option to select it. Any clues?

After restart I can select XINE and it works perfectly. However, I wonder why gstreamer breaks things?

Had you installed the gstreamer plugins required to play your files?
Offline
yaourt -S phonon-mplayer-svn
Works great for me.
Excuse my poor English.

I have only(?) gstreamer0.10, gstreamer0.10-base and gstreamer0.10-base-plugins installed. However, xine works perfect, so I don't need gstreamer now. Thanks.
@Agapito.
yaourt -S phonon-mplayer-svn

Thanks.

For other peoples reference, you probably need gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins to play mp3 (or maybe ...bad-plugins)

pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins ought to take care of everything.

Thanks for your replies.

probably it was already discussed , but...why gstreamer as default?

For html5 support and other things I don't remember .

and I still don't understand why I have to install gconf or orbit in a fresh kde install...:/

I'm also having issues with gestreamer backend and Amarok. I can play mp3s but Amarok doesn't want to play ogg files with the gstreamer backend. Works perfectly with the xine backend. I've already searched on google for a solution but didn't find one. So I'll stick with xine until this issue is fixed.

If you just want ogg support & don't want to install the "gstreamer0.10-plugins" group , you can install "gstreamer0.10-base-plugins" . It provides the following :
Provides : gstreamer0.10-alsa=0.10.23 gstreamer0.10-theora=0.10.23 gstreamer0.10-libvisual=0.10.23
gstreamer0.10-pango=0.10.23 gstreamer0.10-cdparanoia=0.10.23 gstreamer0.10-vorbis=0.10.23
gstreamer0.10-ogg=0.10.23 gst-plugins-base=0.10.23

Thanks for your help, but I already had all the plugins installed. Unfortunately Amarok doesn't print out anything useful on the console, when I try to open ogg files.
Here's what I tried so far:
-uninstalled xine backend (I've read somewhere that this could cause some trouble)
-removed all the xine files in the user home directory
-compiled gstreamer0.10-base
-compiled gstreamer0.10-base-plugins
-compiled taglib
-compiled taglib-extras
Result: Juk can play ogg, but I don't know if Juk uses the phonon backend (somehow I don't think so). Dragon and Amarok can't play ogg. Seems like they can't read the tags, as I can't even add a file to Amaroks playlist.
So I have no clue what's causing the trouble and I fear I don't have the skills to solve it on my own. Also I'm too lazy to compile any debug packages...

Why do you compile ?
Anyway , If you have "gstreamer0.10-plugins" installed & only ogg files are not playing , then something fishy is happening .

Because I didn't think. ;-) At first I thougth it was a problem with gstreamer, so I compiled the gstreamer packages, Then I tried the totem player and it worked. Next I compiled the taglib libraries. The packages in extra are not the newest versions, so I decided to give a try to the new versions .I did this because I think that the taglib libraries are responsible for extracting the tags from the ogg file.
MP3 do play with the gstreamer backend. I didn't test any other file formats than ogg and mp3.

You need mplayer installed for video previews on dolphin.
You have smplayer. The best media player on linux and the best option for kde4 users.
Why install gstreamer or xine, when mplayer backend works perfect?
yaourt -S phonon-mplayer-svn
Excuse my poor English.

I've got the same issue with gstreamer-enabled amarok. Ogg files can't be even added to the playlist. Tryed installing gstreamer0.10-plugins. Doesn't help.

With Xine backend, can you play ogg ?

probably it was already discussed , but...why gstreamer as default?
Good question. I like gstreamer but last I remember gstreamer was being dropped from phonon, guess that's changed.
Yeah, can't get ogg to play in amarok either.
