xf86-video-intel version 2.8 (final) is out for about 2 weeks and the RC2 (i guess) in extra is flagged out-of-date since then, but the driver didn't get an update. I like "stable marked" drivers on my system and wanted to ask, when do I can expect the driver in extra? And why isn't it updated? Are there any difficulties?
Offline
is there actually a code difference or was RC2 the same as the final release?

I don't see reason to update a driver to a version that results in a 100% identical binary except for the version number. I can use my CPU cycles and bandwidth for more useful things.

Good to know, I already built 2.8.0 myself, i'm just gonna roll back to the Arch-maintained one.

Sorry, I didn't know that.

Well, here is your chance now, 2.8.1 is out, 7 bug fixes, compiled it and runs perfectly...

imo this link is more helpful :

pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Thanks man. Now that you've managed to piss off the maintainer, we probably won't see 2.8.1 in extra for a while now. It's not even in testing yet. He's already made it obvious that it's not a priority for him, so let's not make it worse. We're probably building and installing on our own for the time being. Arch is righteous, but it is an all volunteer deal, so we shouldn't pick fights with maintainers, lest we find ourselves suddenly adopting thousands of PKGBUILDs all at once.

Who is fighting with the maintainers???
I agree with 'em perfectly about 2.8.0, there was no code change between 2.8.0 and 2.7.99.902...
I'm sorry if my post sounded... I don't know, english is not my native language ![]()
For me it makes no difference will it make it to the repos sooner or later...
Or never...
Again, if I offended JGC I apologize, never my intention to do that...
edit: furthermore when I started to use arch I sugested that 2.7 video-intel was not ready untill xorg-server update (tiling bug) and snowman uploaded older version of video-intel almost instantly, I don't mean to boss around, just trying to be helpfull...
oh and one more thing, if u are referring to the direct link of xf86-video-intel I've posted, it wasn't ment for JGC or other maintainers, it was ment for all the users who won't wait for driver to hit the repos... Somehow I think that all of them who maintain certain packages know how to find what they need ;-)

It was the tone of your original message that made me wonder, but it's probably just a language issue. My apologies.
JGC's response to the original poster was pretty harsh, I thought, although if you care about a particular driver you really should read the changelogs/release notes, which some of us don't. The xf86-video-intel developers have really annoyed a lot of people with the regressions they've introduced with the switch to UXA and DRI2, although it is getting better. I just wonder if the maintainer is one of them, or if he just doesn't use the hardware and doesn't care. I just don't want anyone to say or do anything to make it worse, even unintentionally. And, of course, I could be completely wrong.
Did you do a generic source build, or did you modify the pkgbuild? I was going to try changing the pkgbuild.

I didn't see your edits before I posted. I wasn't commenting on the link you posted, that was someone else. And I completely agree about the 2.7.x series. I didn't have intel graphics hardware until 2.7.x was around, so I didn't witness the regressions from earlier versions. But I think it will get better from this point on, especially as KMS matures with 2.6.31 onwards. But I think I sense something going on between the maintainer and this package.

Well for a while now I've participated in bug tracking and testing the xf86-video-intel driver @freedesktop and I'm finally satisfied how intel driver perform.
If you don't use 2.6.31-rc kernel, when final hit the repo's you are going to feel the difference between 2.6.30 and 2.6.31. Every single bug that has been bothering me has been fixed (except the brightness keys doesn't work out of the box) but Greg Hartman is working on this...
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20963
I'm currently using 2.6.31-rc7 + xf86-video-intel 2.8.1
Back on topic - I don't think that maintainer has something against xf86-video-intel drivers, maybe he is busy currently or something, I don't like going into that - I'm sure they are doing their best...
edit: I've downloaded and compiled the tarball, 2.8.0 at that time was still in git... I don't use PKGBUILD because a habit is a habit and it's hard to teach old dog new tricks
I know the advantages it's just not 2hard for me to do make uninstall instead of pacman -R package ![]()
