Official 2009.08-RC1 snapshot images for public testing

Hi,
We're close to releasing new official Arch installation media.
The release date is planned latest on 09. August 2009, but we like to
have pacman 3.3 on the snapshots if possible.

These media will bring *a lot* of new things, so we would like some
broader testing.

The most important changes since 2009.02:
- usage of new AIF installer
- better disk editor with support for dm_crypt and lvm setups
- support for automated installations (deprecates quickinst)
- aufs instead of unionfs
- smarter, faster, better boot device detection (esp. for usb users)
- better date/time setting
- refactored grub installation routines
- and more...

To test this, you can try many things:
- the interactive and automatic procedures.
- net & cd-based installations
- usb vs cd-rom images, isolinux vs grub.

We would like to have the following tested:
- time/timezone setting with UTC and localtime
- If the boot device gets detected properly during archiso boot hook
- grub bootloader installation
- If USB images detect the USB controller properly

well i am seeding the archlinux netinstall.img and can't download the x86_64 .iso netintall . I will try to download the i686 ones and seed them

yeah there's something wrong with our torrents.  You can use the normal download links for now, we'll fix the torrents later today

I downloaded the "archlinux-2009.08-RC1-netinstall-i686.img.torrent" version, and indeed, the torrent wasn't going strong. The "web seed" link in the torrent wasn't correct; after changing it, I was then able to download the torrent, but the only source was build.archlinux.org ! Anyway.

I did the install on a Asus Eee PC 1005HA, and as far as I can tell, everything went pretty smooth. I setup an encrypted root filesystem, but I didn't use the new disk editor features for it.

From a user standpoint, the "new" installer looks pretty the same as the one found on 2009.02. Setting the clock is easier, and had no problem with it, choosing localtime (since there's already Windows XP installed on this PC) and America/Montreal timezone. GRUB was installed correctly, it didn't mess anything.

During the installation process, I've seen twice a line with a black background (error line?), but I couldn't actually tell what it was about, since they passed too fast. One was while package were getting installed, and I don't remember about the other.

Also, maybe it's just a glitch with the Eee, but the installer "window" wasn't taking the whole screen, I think it was missing two columns to the right and one to the bottom, but this is really minor, as far as I care.

Also, I found that the "set filesystem mountpoint" section might be a bit "easier to go through" on the 2009.02 installer than on this one, but that's a personal opinion, and it's actually far from being a problem.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. the window issue is new for me, afaik the dialogs should be fullscreen.
yeah the filesystem settings dialog is a bit more complicated, but it's also a lot more powerful too bad you didn't do the encryption setup inside the installer, it's really made for this now

If anyone knows about a simple consle client for bittorrent that supports websseds, please let me know. rtorrent does not support it.

If transmission-cli (use transmission-daemon) is simple use that. Also has a nice webui.

Ahh this takes AGES to download per torrent.. ^^ Cant await to test it since I have a new system to install Archlinux on.

Suddenly the buildservers speed increased Oo I'm almost done.. Will seed with 200kbyte/s, I thinkt that's better than nothing xD

oh, I was under the impression that the final build will be released on the 9th of August

Can you make a PXE install with this release ? I haven't does this before , it's not needed for me anyway but i saw some trouble with PXE  here.

PXE: IMHO this is not possible out-of-the-box. Cause the underlying system is different against for ex. tpowa's archboot (which keep everything in initrd image, definetely an advantage for this case).
So it's neccassary to export the squashfs/aufs via something like nbd/vblade/iSCSI or similar.
I will look at this next weeks to find a solution or workflow...
Otherwise (cause AIF could be obtained as a package) installation is always possible from a PXE-booted Arch system.

actually, pxe-booting and better cooperation/integration-with-archboot-proposal was one of my post-2009.08 ideas.  (so much for the suprise effect )
