Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Hi.

I have a laptop with HDMI. Picture through HDMI is no problem, but using sound is not possible. aplay -l spitts out:

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC268 Digital [ALC268 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I see that all those who get it working as HDA Nvidia instead of HDA Intel, and most of them have a HDMI too. I made a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base with:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

Without it I didn't have the Digital from aplay -l, but with it I don't have ANY sound. Not from speakers and not from HDMI. The IEC958 is unmounted from alsamixer.

Please help!

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

I've got the same hardware and I have sound through HDMI.

Just make sure you are using a recent alsa ( >= 1.0.18a) and a recent kernel.

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Here is my aplay -l output:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC1200 Digital [ALC1200 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Does your output show any HDMI device?

If so, you just have to select it as an output from the application you want to use.

If you don't have an output like that, you're probably missing something.

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Hmm..No it doesnt show any HDMI device sad
aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC268 Digital [ALC268 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

And if I forgot to mention that I have not sound in HDMI either in my pc speakers.

Without the options snd-hda-intel model=3stack in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I have sound in my pc speakers and almost the same aplay -l output but without the

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC268 Digital [ALC268 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

sorry for my terrible english

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Why do you use the "model=3stack" module parameter? I don't use any of that.
And if it also doesn't work without it, try another model name.

Also, post your alsa and linux version, just to compare.

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Because the codec is the Realtek ALC268,and it has 3 models:3stack,toshiba,acer.None of them has worked.
kernel:
           2.6.30-ARCH
alsa:
           alsa-lib 1.0.20-1
           alsa-utils 1.0.20-2

EDIT:
Without the model=3stack I have sound in my pc speakers, but aplay-l dont list any "Digital" device etc

Have you tried the alsa bugtracker?

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug

Check it out, it might help. wink

Re: Audio through HDMI with nVidia 9600M GT

Old post again, but I think I have found some useful information.

I use a Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 with Nvidia 9300M GS with a HDMI output.
All of a sudden my HDMI started working this morning. No updates from the night before seem relevant at all, a mystery for another thread.

lsmod gives me snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi which wasn't there from last time I tried to get it working. Looking in /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/kernel/sound/pci/hda I found the HDA codec modules. Of particular interest are the hdmi ones:

snd-hda-codec-atihdmi.ko snd-hda-codec-intelhdmi.ko snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi.ko

Try to modprobe snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi and see what happens. Add it to the modules array in rc.conf and reboot. I'm still trying to find out if there is more to it than this module suddenly loading this morning that makes the magic happen.
