After a recent update of X, following error occured by running startx:
Fatal Server error
can't read lock file /tmp/.X0-lock
Has anybody an idea how to solve this problem?
PS: sry for my bad english...

What are the permissions on /tmp? (ls -la /tmp)
Is there anything interesting in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Xorg.0.log shows nothing unusual.
Permissions for /tmp (the directory) are read write and execute for everyone.
On .X0-lock, ls says something like it can't access to the file because the nfs file-access-number is outdated (not exactly that wording but my OS speaks german)

I found out, that removing the lock file would solve the problem, but I cannot get rid of this stupid file!
I tried "rm -rf" I tried it with a live-cd, nothing worked. It says: Permission denied
Has anybody an idea how to get rid of this lock file?

Were you root? As root you should be able to do just about anything, unless that was the lock file it was currently using. I think.

Yep, I was root, and I'm wondering too....
I also tried to delete the file using the inode number, no success.
Everytime an application wants to access the file it gives me an: "stale nfs filehandle" message, but I don't even use nfs.

A fsck from partedmagic did solve the problem!
