Tweaking the ATI Open Source Drivers in XOrg?

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X600 and it's no longer supported by the catalyst driver so I'm using the free radeon driver.

I'm having terrible performance issues with Compiz (and everything else) despite direct rendering being enabled and was wondering if anyone knew of a good site for tweaking xorg.conf?

I know I can get good performance out of the driver because I used it briefly with Ubuntu Hardy.

man radeon describes all the available options - start with that, and then google if required.
