Like many of you, I was hit by the recent upgrade to xorg-server-1.6.3-1 and nvidia ....18.31-1
Two days ago, I went through this cycle and managed to downgrade all 3 packages, then my system booted up again and X worked fine.
I made the mistake of reading (into) a posting from earlier today which made me think that redoing those updates and then trying a modprobe -r for nvidia was going to fix things... So I did today's pacman -Syu... I still had the same X problem that people have been having. Only this time, attempting to downgrade has not worked. Now on bootup there is a dbus error and a " [fail] " message, and now I cannot upgrade or downgrade any of those packages anymore due to file conflicts which I think are associated somehow with xorg-server.
X will (obviously) not start, but trying causes odd error messages like:
" /usr/bin/X line 2: /bin: is a directory "
" /usr/bin/X line 3: Desktop: command not found "
and they get worse from there.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to lift myself out of this morass and at least get back to a working system with the downgraded (18.14 & 1.6.2) versions of nvidia and xorg-server? I assume a pacman -f might help, but usually that is to be avoided if possible, so I'm hoping someone has better suggestions.
thanks much

Hello djg1971!
Save the files before force install, and give it a try to it.
