Greetings,
Seem to be having issues with gnome screen saver. After unlocking from lockscreen, I get a black screen flicker. Checking logs shows
gnome-screensaver-dialog: pam_unix_auth(gnome-screensaver:auth): conversation failed
Found a fix ( post #13 ) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/227994 for ubuntu users. Wondering if this will work in arch.
[ current perms ]
-rw------- 1 root root 522 2009-07-31 13:14 /etc/gshadow
-rw------- 1 root root 455 2009-07-20 18:41 /etc/gshadow-
Cheers,
~nolo

Hello nolochemical!
If it works you can change to solved.

I did not get a chance to try the fix. Thought I would continue testing the screensaver over a few days.
What really sucks is that /etc/gshadow was overwritten today by a version upgrade.
[2009-08-07 17:29] Fixing gshadow file ...
[2009-08-07 17:29] upgraded shadow (4.1.4.1-1 -> 4.1.4.2-1)
The permissions remain the same; yet no error, black screen flicker, or pam_auth errors. I cant confirm if it was the upgrade rewritting gshadow that did it, so I'm going to continue watching the logs untill monday or so.. I will post the results.

Error remains. In previous posts 2 fixes were offered.
#1) sudo chgrp shadow /etc/shadow
- There does not seem to be a group ' shadow ' within arch and I dont want to add one for a screensaver
#2
sudo chown root:shadow /sbin/unix_chkpwd
sudo chmod 2755 /sbin/unix_chkpwd
- same idea here ..
Current looks like its perms are setuid to root
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 29399 2009-03-09 13:35 unix_chkpwd
I think I can partially validate fix #2 above with information from this post( #2 ). [ http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=36134 ]
Going to try below, I'm not sure where/how to describe the why? but I think its pointing to bug in libpam
sudo chmod -s /sbin/unix_chkpwd
More info soon.

I was locked out with -rwxr-xr-x /sbin/unix_chkpwd
and -rwsr-sr-x /sbin/unix_chkpwd gives the same error. Next stop is re-installing pam.
