Can't run any terminals, X crashes

Guake, regualar and root terminals give me this error:

There was an error creating the child process for this terminal

. Also, X (or gnome?) crashes continuously and spontaneously, dunno if the two problems are related.

More errors:

"Failed to run gnome-terminal as user root", and "Failed to run ntfs-config as user root"

I'm logged in as myself, not root, so maybe I screwed up the permissions of some important file somewhere? If that's the case, how can I reset it?

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

Try reading through /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any line that begins with (EE).  That might help determine why X is crashing.   You could also run

$tail /var/log/messges

to see if anything there helps you.  Finally you could check

$dmesg

to see if theres any messages there.  If you see some odd errors in reference to Gnome or X post them here, maybe we can help decipher them.

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/messages both gave me a 'file does not exist' error. dmesg gave a long list, repreating this same scary error:

[fglrx:firegl_find_any_map]*ERROR*Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open]*ERROR*map not found ->inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start: 0x7fe6f1720000,handle:0xbl004000

edit:
I found Xorg.0.log through nautilus and found this error:

(EE) Failed to load module "fgl.renamed.libglx" (module does not exist, 0),

I  messages.log I found:

  WARNING: Failed to send buffer
WARNING: Running '/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --shutdown' at logout returned an exit status of '15'

and

'acpi:LNXSYSTM:' is not a valid module or alias name

(the first of many) and

[fglrx] GART Table is not in FRAME_BUFFER range

So many errors, I had no idea :-O

Also check .xsession-errors in your home folder.

sad.xsessions-errors was such a long convoluted mess that I put the whole thing here:

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

Did this start after a kernel or video driver update.  Which kernel version are you on and what is your video card?

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

I'm not sure exactly what my kernel version is but I ran pacman -Syu yesterday so it should be the latest.
I think all this began after I switch to the proprietary Ati driver hmm
I could try reverting back to the open-source one but before I do I'd like to know if the proprietary driver itself is causing the problem and not me installing it incorrectly or whatever.

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

I use nvidia and don't know anything about Ati unfortunately.  But I googled some of the errors and found this:

Re: Can't run any terminals, X crashes

yes, thats exactly the error I have. Unless anyone suggests something else I'm going to try switching back to open-source. And fron gnome to E17(maybe) while I'm at it.
