I'm trying to follow this guide [http://www.linuxforums.org/articles/the … l_272.html] to compile my first kernel, because I need to add a patch for my audio interface and real-time capabilities in the 2.6.30 version (current ArchAudio RT version is 2.6.29 if I'm not mistaken.) Anyway, I want to base my kernel configuration from the standard 2.6.30-ARCH which is already installed on my system. According to this guide most distro's have a /boot/config-2.6.30 (for example). My boot directory only contains:
System.map26 diag1.img kernel26.img lost+found
System.map26rt grub kernel26rt-fallback.img vmlinuz26
boot.0810 kernel26-fallback.img kernel26rt.img vmlinuz26rt

May I point you to some relevant results in the wiki? Notably http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … n_with_ABS and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source.
ABS/makepkg and the other Arch-specific methods are the way to go. Otherwise pacman won't be able to keep track of your kernel. It should go without saying that this situation should be avoided.
