Getting rid of esd

I've read here and elsewhere that if I'm running ALSA, I don't need esd. However, when I try to remove esd, pacman says that xmms and mplayer both need it. Do I have to rebuild them without esd in the PKGBUILD before I can remove esd?

xmms: if you remove esd with -Rd xmms should work, as long as you don't use the esound output plugin

mplayer: i have no idea - but trying is easy with pacman
