For some reason when I open a text document, it opens it with Abiword. How do I edit it so gedit is the default text program?

I imagine you use GNOME, so in Nautilus:
Right-click any file of the type you want to open and select the "open with different application" option (probably called something else, can't remember exact wording). Look through the list until you find gedit. Select it and check the box at the bottom that says something like "use this as the default" and open it. Done.

yes I'm using gnome. when I right click and say to use gedit, there's no click box to select to make it use it everytime. is there another place to do that? Where in Gnome can you set it to be the default editor?

Try right click, select Properties, then Open With then Text Editor for gedit.
