How do you login? E.g. from GDM or straight from a console?

Straight from a console, after that I start gdm.

Try switching to another TTY and see if that helps. Several people have been reporting similar problems, but only on tty1. It happens to me today on a new 64 bit install.

When you updated did the update include the inittab changes? Maybe it's related to that. You should be able to boot from a live CD, chroot into your system and look at pacman.log and see what was updated.

As i understand qaswed tried to login from console, maybe from gdm. What happens if he tried to login from other dm, e.g. if those are taken into the daemon section of /etc/rc.conf

Hi,
I have the same problem since last update. Went throught pacman.log but didn't find anything unusual.
Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix this?
EDIT: just realised how old this post is.. hope someone will notice it..
EDIT 2: ok, for anyone searching, i managed to fix it by reinstalling util-linux which somehow was missing some files.
