So i reset it to defaults using itunes, connected it to my pc and opened gtkpod.
I had the music in my music library so I just selected an individual track right clicked and copied to ipod. Then clicked save changes and ejected the ipod. It works for a single track.
If I do the same again for all the tracks it seems to complete the sync to the ipod but then the app freezes up so I cant eject the ipod. If i just disconnect it, it tells me theres only 1 track there (from the successful sync), but if I then connect it to itunes, itunes tells me there is 75gig of music on there and I can see the music if i browse to the ipod itself.
Any ideas?

it sounds like the files just didn't get written to the itunesdb file. If you use the "Checking iPod Files" feature in the file menu, it should be able to identify all the orphaned tracks on the ipod and write them to the db file.
