Ted is a WordPad-like editor for Linux and BSD. It only supports RTF, but can also export the output to PDF, PS and HTML. It is more lightweight than AbiWord, has fewer dependencies and has a balanced set of functionality. It is not meant to be a substitute for MS Word, OO Writer or KWord. It does, however, support all the basic formatting, including font beautifiers, paragraph styling and footnotes. It is a great solution for a lightweight distractionless simple word processor which is nice to use in XFCE/LXDE/*box or other lightweight GTK environments. Netbook users, rejoice!
After nearly 4 years since the version of 2.17 the new release, 2.20 has seen the light on the 7th of July. The biggest (and probably the only so far) highlight is transition to GTK (instead of Motif), which also solves the problems with font rendering and UTF-8 support. The author is about to finish a bugfix release, 2.21, pretty soon.

Apart from various bugs (which I believe will get sorted out pretty soon), my only complaint is probably a lack of import options. Ted should probably follow Bean's (a lightweight word processor for Mac OS X) path, since Bean supports import from DOC/DOCX/ODT files. However, even Bean doesn't support all the features of these formats (even ODT). Second, an interface revamp is probably needed. I would love to see tabbed interface and split window feature in Ted. Finally, keyboard shortcuts should be redesigned.

awayand,
did you recognize the age of this thread? You will more likely get a usable answer if you open a new thread of your own and eventually link back here.
See here about the necro bumping forum etiquette.
