I used yoaurt to install the ctxfi package and it got my sound working but I never installed ALSA or OSS. I looked at the output to see if one of them was installed as a dependency, but I didn't see anything.
Are there any potential problems with this setup?

Hmm, I think this driver is used instead of alsa or oss.

A fully working ctxfi driver has been created for ALSA. It currently builds against 2.6.30 and will likely be included in 2.6.31. It is superior to this Creative-made driver in every way and should exclusively be used in the future for Creative X-fi products. Find more information here: http://mailman.alsa-project.org/piperma … 17332.html
Thought I should post the heads up here

ALSA is a kernel module now. Every other ALSA package adds functionality.

Oh yes you did. ALSA is in the kernel, as is ctxfi (starting with kernel 2.6.31).
ctxfi is an ALSA driver, so will not work without ALSA.
