After reinstalling Arch Linux nautilus now always open in the top left corner with a default size.
Setting /apps/metacity/general/disable_workarounds to true doesn't change anything.
I have compiz installed.

I think this was a known issue with nautilus. The latest trunk version of nautilus should have a fix for this.

So, I must wait for Gnome 2.28 ?
It's weird because yesterday (before reinstallation) I haven't had this issue

I'm not 100% sure of course, but I can only say I have the same experience on multiple computers and I've seen the same bug report on ubuntu launchpad where the nautilus developer says he doesn't have it with trunk nautilus. You don't have to wait yourself for gnome 2.28. You could build it yourself with abs (you can base yourself on the current nautilus pkgbuild). If you need any help on that, just mention it. I'll be more than happy to help you out.

I've tried to build nautilus 2.27.4 but it depends on some other 2.27 libs.
Also, I've found on the internet that this bug only affects new Gnome instalations. If Gnome was upgraded from 2.24 everything is ok.

I've had the same problem after I reinstalled Arch. The Problem was, that the gconf-key /apps/nautilus/preferences/navigation_window_saved_geometry was missing.
So create a new one (type: string) with an inital value of e.g. "600x400+100+100". When Nautilus is closed for the next time it saves its position and size in this key.
Please note that English is not my mother tongue.
