Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Hi all! I just installed Archlinux for the first time yesterday and have already run into problems. smile

Quick Summery: Every time I try to start X the screen goes blank and nothing happens.

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop

All the History: (Please forgive the extraneous commentary)
I have been working through the beginners guide on the wiki and everything was going fine until it came time to start up the X system. When I start X all that I get is a blank black screen (according to the beginner's guide I should see a big white X that responds to user input). When I asked for help on the IRC channel yesterday somebody kindly directed me to the section on the wiki specifically dedicated to blank screens after starting X, but after adding root to both the hal and dbus user groups the problem persisted. At about that point I was so frustrated that I gave up for the night, but this morning I decided to try making a complete reinstall to see if that would magically fix the problem.

It didn't fix the problem, but because it was morning and I was more awake than before I had the sense of mind to look at the Xorg log (which I have included bellow). I went through and Googled some of the warnings, but most of the things I found seemed unrelated to my problem (to my untrained eyes) or were solved in a way that I can't use (like returning to a previous good configuration). So I'm wondering if anybody here might be able to help me fix this problem?

Here are my Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf files. If you want to see anything else just ask.

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Hi caleb_j and welcome to the forums.
Have you checked the .xinitrc file in your home directory?

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

have you tried starting a program at the same time as X?

I had the same/a similar "problem" with my first install where it turned out to have worked all along, it just was nothing to show.

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Your setup seems fine, input wise. I'd be most concerned about all the Information lines about SIS(0) and not using specific modes. The more recent X-servers don't need xorg.conf, so remove it and see what the difference is, especially in the log. Other than that, try in your .xinitrc putting "exec xterm" and seeing if any inputs are available and check if the graphics are working properly.

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

@svanberg: I just checked and I don't have any file named .xinitrc in my home directory.

@neheb: I'm fairly new to linux and I'm not sure I know how to start another program at the same time as X (apart from Arch I've only really used Ubuntu and DSL, and they are both slightly more idiot friendly smile )

@majiq: I just tried starting X without the conf file and I seemed to have the same problem as before and a quick glance through the log didn't show any differences, but I'll post it here anyway.

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Are you sure that you tried without the conf file? It's still referencing a config file...weird.

Copy the file from /etc/skel/.xinitrc to your home folder and in it put 'exec xterm' (or just create the file in your home folder and put 'exec xterm') and see if you get a single terminal in which you can provide input.

Also, I notice that the server seems to be closing somewhat gracefully. How do you end up killing the server?

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

I also had this problem with my new installation last week. I am not sure if this is the same point where I got freezed. Is it before or after you installed a desktop environment?
If it is before, I just managed to ignore the error and go on with the guide. When it came to the Desktop Environment everithing went fine. Just make an attempt, if you are in my same situation.
(By the way, I installed KDE).
Let us know

EDIT: It is also reported on the wiki (those two "note" sections at the end of the Test_X paragraph):
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … #C:_Test_X

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

manu83 is correct, continue following the wiki as if there were no  problems. The same thing happened to me in June but by following the wiki forward, I was able to set up an .xinitrc and at last boot into an xterm.

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Try Using the Vesa driver, see if problem persists. if not then its a driver issue

Re: Blank Screen after starting X [SOLVED]

Thanks Everybody! I guess X has been working all along (sans the big white X). After continuing on through the beginners guide I was able to get xterm working just fine, and I am currently downloading LXDE.
