now-infamous xorg/nvidia problem ...

I see that  "xorg-server-utils" is part of the upgrade list for pacman -Syu after this weekend...

Just wondering if anyone knew whether the problem with xorg-server and the latest nvidia packages is still causing problems for people (cannot get any output to the screen and have to do a hard reset).  I downgraded xorg-server and nvidia to work around this, so am looking forward to when it is safe to move on.  Comments?

You'll have to specify what problem. I've been using latest xorg and nvidia without any problems on my laptop (nvidia-beta from AUR).

I'm running nvidia, nvidia-utils, xorg-server, etc. from the repos without issue. I agree with ngoonee that we need more information to help. Please post your GPU model.

Re: now-infamous xorg/nvidia problem ...

Surprised that you are not aware of the issue; many people wrote in over the past couple of weeks about it:  If you had these packages running on your system:

xorg-server-1.6.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
nvidia-185.18.14-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
nvidia-utils-185.18.14-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

and then allowed pacman -Syu to upgrade them, upon reboot you would not be able to start X, and in fact things would get so hung up that you would not be able to access any virtual terminals, or do anything except power off and reboot, the next time entering a flag via grub and then (hopefully) succeeding in downgrading back to the above packages.  I have a lenovo T61 running a 32-bit kernel, but many others running different systems observed the same problem.

May be that a beta version of nvidia through AUR solves the problem, but for those who prefer not to go that route, the question is still open.  What version of nvidia-utils and xorg-server are you using when you do not see this behavior, and on what hardware?  Actually never mind -- I really meant to solicit a response from someone who was familiar with the problem.
