PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

Ok so i have a PPC and i am trying to set up Xorg from source.... (yeah i know this has been posted a million times.)

I am new to semi new to linux, i seen to always go for a linux that has a GUI.

so Arch is currently my first terminal based linux that i will build from the ground up, or so it feels. smile

I tryed to install this xorg though pacman.. well apparently some of the packages wont install. so i decided to go to source.

well i used a git tutorial i found, and some of the packages still did not work so i did most of them by hand.

then out of curiosity i tried pacman again.

well it wants to install less packages than the first time i tried in fact it only wants 1 more. libxkbfile.

i assume that once i get this pkg done pacman will finish the rest? (correct me here, im newb)

but i get this error :

checking for XKBFILE.... configure: error: Package requirements (X11 kbproto) were not met:

Package xproto was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing 'xproto.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'xproto', required by 'X11', not found

so then i

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/lib/pkgconfig"

but i still get the same error as above?

what am i doing wrong

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

Welcome to the forum, earplug!

"I tryed to install this xorg though pacman.. well apparently some of the packages wont install. so i decided to go to source. well i used a git tutorial i found, and some of the packages still did not work so i did most of them by hand." -> Which packages, and what kind of error(s) did it cause ?

Did you install xproto too from extra ? Btw, do you try now manually or with pacman ? With pacman works here well. Which mirror did you try to use to get packages ?

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

Make sure that you've got the mirrors you want uncommented in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.  Then do a "pacman Syy". When you say you went "to source" do you mean you installed the software without pacman as that would not be a good idea, you may need to manually remove the packages.  Then try installing xorg again.

when i go to install with pacman i on some packages i get

Package not found.

and then it will finish downloading the rest of the packages

but not install

right now i am just trying to build the packages it cant find/download from source.

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

I'm sorry if i missed some context hints, but what do you mean by "PPC?" If it's "PowerPC" then you have posted very much in the wrong section. If you're talking about a Pocket PC, then you're probably still in the wrong section, and you need to give more information. If you're referring to something else, then you should probably be more clear (or else i'm just an idiot, which is very possible)

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

PPC = Powerpc.  And why not post here.  I've installed Arch in the past on a powermac and it did just fine.  PowerPC arch though is a bit outdated (the developer just doesn't have the time now).  If you want to keep on using arch post just what won't install when you try to install xorg.  Personally though (no tripe to Arch) I'd try something like Debian which has real good PPC support or even Fedora (which I heard is good but haven't tried).

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

I found a better mirrior for arch PPC

http://mirror.oscc.org.my/archlinux/extra/os/ppc/

i think the other mirror i was using was bad.

Just to make sure i can place this list in my /etc/pacman.conf like so:

[extra]
Server = http://mirror.oscc.org.my/archlinux/extra/os/ppc/

do i have to put $repo in there?

Re: PPC setup of Xorg is Fail

Put $repo in place of 'extra'. Also note that a lot of the packages on that server are quite out of date... PPC Arch is not well supported. I would recommend a different distro for a PPC.
