Network problems during installation

Howdy y'all (and I'm not even Texan),

I'm determined to migrate from Xubuntu to Arch Linux. I worked through a lot of problems already, but I'm totally stuck configuring the network. The computer I'm trying to install this on is a Dell Vostro 1510. Xubuntu was able to connect perfectly fine without needing ndiswrapper or anything like that. Here are my network specs:

Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller

When I try to configure it with DHCP, I get this error on the tty7 screen:

dhcpcd: dhcpcd not running
dhcpcd version 5.0.6 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carried
dhcpcd: timed out

But that's okay. I just did that part manually.

Fast forward to selecting sources, I get this error:

Pacman preperation failed! Check /dev/tty7 for errors.

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.optus.net : Transient revolver failure
error: failed to update core (Transient resolver failure)
error: failed to synchronize any databases

So, I decided to go to a terminal. I entered the command 'ifconfig eth0 up' here.

ifconfig looked like this:

eth0
Link encap: Ethernet HQaddr 00:21:70:D8:FB:23
inet addr: 192.168.0.2 Bcast: 192.168.255 Mask: 255.255.255.0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes: 0 (o.o b) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt: 29 Base address:0x2000

lo

TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:720 (720.0 b) TX byes: 720 (720.0 b)

iwconfig looks like this

lo
no wireless extensions.
eth0
no wireless extensions

I tried scanning for a network and it said "Interface doesn't support scanning."

I tried  '# iwconfig wlan0 essid "MyEssid" key 1234567890' with my real ssid and wep code and it gave me this error:

Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A)
SET failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported

I'm competent with all the easy Linux systems although I know that I'm a true Linux newb, but this is pretty frustrating. My network switch is flipped on, I know it's not that. Please help me out.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Network problems during installation

Try turning your computer and modem off for 5 minutes - it may be
that it [ the modem ] needs to release the connection and find a new one.

Shot-in-the-dark, but it'll cost you nothing smile

Re: Network problems during installation

I tried it a few times and no luck. Thanks for the try though.

Re: Network problems during installation

You say you configured eth0 manually - did you also provide nameservers (/etc/resolv.conf) and a gateway (route)?
