Things I should install/setup in Arch to make it like desktop distro

I'm trying Arch again as soon as i get my new wireless card (my current one is no good with kernels above 2.6.28)

here's something i think would be a good learning exercise, post install. what are all the things i need to install to make my arch your usual desktop distro for the masses?

think, ubuntu, opensuse or fedora (whatever you like really) this is something i hope will be a good learning exercise.

thanks smile

Too long to list, just install what you are going to use.

Follow the beginners guide.

Pick a window manager.. and K-GO

Then just pick the extra crap you want.

Re: Things I should install/setup in Arch to make it like desktop distro

Generally I installed Arch with Gnome and added stuff as I needed it.

If you want Ubuntu like net connection you could install networkmanager and network manager applet and set up the daemons for it. I found after a few days had what I needed and acts close to Ubuntu desktop but found it more responsive than Ubuntu

Depends what you use your box for. I require cups, bluetooth, codecs, a browser and a few plugins, wicd, openntp, cpufreq, hdaps, laptop-mode and mysql

Don't forget, if you're on a laptop, to install the bluetooth stuff, think its called blueman or something.

If you really want it to be like a desktop distro, use Pulseaudio. GUI apps are moving in that direction, though pulse itself has a bad reputation to overcome. I've been using it with no problems.

Follow the Arch wiki's pulse section combined with the guide on the pulse website called "the perfect setup"
Pulse really isn't that bad.
