When I try to test X with the above file I only get a blank screen. It shows no white X or anything. I am running on a ATI Radeon 4850 with the open-source radeonhd drivers. I have a 21inch Dell CRT with a default resolution of 1600x1200 and a maximum refresh rate of 85Hz. What am I doing wrong and how can I get X working? I have been tinkering with this for two days now.

Re: Please assist - Configuring X

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you rename the xorg.conf to xorg.conf.bak and just start X without a config file? It's supposed to auto-detect now...

Another point to be sure of: do you have

exec xterm

in your /home/USERNAME/.xinitrc ? If not, then nothing will happen, even if you have the xorg.conf perfect. (meaning, X started, but wasn't given anything to open graphically.)

I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...

huh? oooh...  shiny!

I attempted your first suggestion with no results, except the screen displayed red lines for a second.

...and I switched out of root to my normal user and installed that Xinitrc thing you were talking about. I typed in the commend startx and I got a x mouse cursor and a grey terminal window in the left-top corner. Does this mean it is working correctly?

BTW I have the xorg.conf file left on default, I haven't changed it back yet. Should I?

Also, thank you so far.

Re: Please assist - Configuring X

The mouse and keyboard works. The resolution is correct. Well, I am going to go ahead and install my desktop environment, thank you.
