libtiff problems - 100% CPU

system i686
arch up to date
libtiff 3.9.0-1
libtiff 3.9.1-1
opening directory with tiff in filemanager from gimp, openoffice firefox causes cpu to go up to 100%

this is a newly introduced bug as I dod not have any issues with tiff diles before. This is happening after one time editimg of either 16-bit or 8-bit tiff

The problem does not affect dolphin though.

Re: libtiff problems - 100% CPU

You mean that if in gimp you go in the menu: Files-> Open
then go in a directory with tiff, you'll get a 100% CPU use. Right?

I put a few tiff file in a directory but couldn't reproduce this in gimp or firefox. How many tiff files are there in the directory? Are they big? How long the CPU remains at 100%? Do you get this behaviour with libtiff 3.8.2-6 ?

yes

one tiff file is enough. After transfer only I can easily open it without any issues (fast). When I start editing and (even if file is not yet exported to jpeg) and I try to open directory from gimp file manager or openoffice, CPU goes 100% and it takes ~30sec - 1min to refresh directory and make file available for selection. After file is loaded to the program, CPU goes down and I can work on the tiff. Other formats are not affected. As I mentioned KDE file managers are also not affected.

hmmm....
o.k.
this may be related to the program generating tiff files rather than libtiff. Old tiff files do not cause (at first trial) any problems, new tiffs generated by the same program do.
On the other hand, windows/OS X version of Photoshop is not affected (or any of the above OSes file managers), on linux only gtk or similar seem to have problems.

If you are interested, I can email/upload one of the tiffs affected so you could analyse the issue?

Otherwise I am pessimistic about possible resolution.

note
actually old and new tiffs will cause this problem.
there was an bug in libtiff that caused app crash, I wonder if this is related?
e.g.

Thanks

Re: libtiff problems - 100% CPU

the debian patch seem to be for 3.8.2.  I'll need to check if it has been merged in 3.9.X.

Compress and email me one of the tiff that cause the problem. I'll see if I can reproduce it.

Re: libtiff problems - 100% CPU

hello Snowman,

I am quite unhappy, because problem is gone since yesterday. I am unhappy because I don't know what caused it and in the future I will not be able to fix this if it will reappear.

I updated system yesterday:
raptor 1.4.19-1
redland 1.0.9-1
syslog-ng 3.0.4-1
module-init-tools 3.10-1
libarchive 2.7.1-1
coreutils 7.5-1
imagemagick 6.5.5.6-1

these updates seem irrelevant though.

I send you an email but I could not find an option to attach file, if you would like to check these tiffs, email me back with information how to attach tiff

thank you

Re: libtiff problems - 100% CPU

The imagemagick had a fix for libtiff.  The changelog only say "Add support for TIFF 3.9.1".  I'm not sure what that implies but it might have fix the problem (even though gimp and firefox don't depend on it).

my email address is here: http://www.archlinux.org/developers/#EricB
Just replace the '.' before archlinux' by a '@'
