Boot time reduction in Knoppix3.7

A new idea in Knoppix forum "IDEAS" utilizes a change to the boot process to reduce boot time in Knoppix by one full minute.  It is called "readahead" and is incorporated in a download available from the Japanese server aist and is referenced in the Knoppix forum "IDEAS".

I have tried it and it does reduce the time by exactly one minute on Knoppix3.7 as downloaded from aist server.

It is entered as an additional cheatcode to Knoppix.

This would be great if we could implement this in archlinux.

Re: Boot time reduction in Knoppix3.7

does anyone knows how can one create the readahead cache list? i heard there is a patch for the kernel to display each file opened/accessed, but i cant seem to find it. are there any other ways? i also tried making a small program to hook "open" calls, but it wont show me commands executed (for obvious reasons).

im planning on adding the readahead as optional to Archie (live project, see here) for systems with 384MB and above.

thanks.
