If somebody knows something like please share(:
Sorry my English.

If you install 'dictd' and run dict <your word> from the command-line, you get not only
the definition but also a thesaurus with synonyms. There are plenty of other options, but
this is a quick-fix I often use.

When a single word search term is entered into the US version of Google, at the top of the results page it says something like
Results 1 - 10 of about 228,000,000 for dictionary [definition]. (0.11 seconds)
Clicking on "definition" will take me to a dictionary definition.
Arch web sites primarily use US English. Two American flavored dictionaries are dictionary.com at http://dictionary.reference.com/ and Merriam-Webster, http://www.merriam-webster.com/ My browser's javascript blocker and ad blocker are very busy at the Merriam-Webster site.
For a more British-flavoured dictionary, try http://dictionary.cambridge.org/.
There is also WordWeb, http://wordweb.info/free/, a very good free application for MS Windows, but I don't know if it will run using Wine.

I use SDCV (StarDict command-line version) with three dictionaries and two thesauruses installed locally. This way I don't need to be connected to a network.

deej, thanks.I'll try one.

Thank you, skottish, for the tip to sdcv.

Try goldendict [ its in the repositories ], I've just installed it and it's very good.
Don't bother installing dictionaries for it straight away, just run a test word or
two thru' it and see what you think.

Try Aiksaurus. It is a command-line thesaurus.

I'm using some listed under the startdict-dictionaries-dictd section. Obviously these will work under dictd also, but I prefer the sdcv interface.

Hmm don't see a startdict-dictionaries-dictd section section. Perhaps I missed it? See some *-dictionaries-dictd-language entries in different places, no english, however.

skottish, where are the tabs?
eize, sdcv is great. Try stardict-dictd-moby-thesaurus or stardict-thesaurus-ee from the startdict-dictionaries-dictd section.

Under then 'tabs' group, uncheck "Always show the tab bar". Then if there's only one, it doesn't show up.

Ha, I though it was some addon. I almost always got 20+ tabs open... No tabs look so much better!
Edit: I find a addon called "hide tabbar". Now if I press Ctrl+Del, the tabs are gone.

Really liking this sdcv thing, thanks for the tip skottish. I added sdcv and a couple dictionaries (both in the AUR) and life is alot better now .
I've built a couple scripts for ease of use and to improve formatting. You can take a look at them here:
The 'define' script has some rudimentary sed hacks (i.e. could be tidied up a bit by someone who knowns sed good), (WordNet has some poor formatting), but run just fine.
