Audio issues with Kaffeine, Amarok and Firefox together

Hello,

So yesterday I noticed that I can no longer have audio in Firefox (Flash), Amarok, or Kaffeine at the same time or even if I just pause one to start another. It works for some (Amarok gets on fine sometimes with Flash in Firefox), but I can no longer play audio at the same time in Kaffeine or Amarok or Kaffeine and Firefox. I used to be able to pause audio in Kaffeine and play it in Firefox and vice versa. Now Amarok will error and crash if I try and use it while Kaffeine is open and has a video paused.

Kaffeine (KDE3) and Amarok (also KDE3) both use xine and should get along fine, but they suddenly no longer work together. And Kaffeine shouldn't be stealing the sound from Flash in Firefox, either.

I don't remember there being an update to xine or Alsa that would cause this, but it's suddenly broken and I haven't done anything weird to it. Does anyone else use these three apps together?

Any help appreciated smile

Thanks!

Hello Kalinda!

" <- Can you show the error output if you run this from console ?

I have the same problem. Removing flash works as a workaround. Apparently flash demands to have exclusive rights to the sound device.

So... there isn't a fix for this? just a complaint forum?

Re: Audio issues with Kaffeine, Amarok and Firefox together

See which app is using OSS (actually ALSA's emulation of OSS) instead of ALSA, thereby messing up dmix:

fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

And, er, make it use ALSA instead.

Edit: Also see similar thread for info tidbits.

You can also try to blacklist snd_seq_oss snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss and see if firefox (flash) still hijacks your soundcard .... no more oss so it should be forced to use alsa or pulse or whatever it can find I guess.
