I have been trying to get X to work on Arch Linux on my computer for days now, but did not succeed until yesterday. I managed to install X and get it to work properly, then I downlodaded GNOME according to a wiki article here. The problem is that all windows looks really wierd and everything just looks fucked up. I know it is not supposed to be like this, but how do I fix it? I got X and GNOME installed on Arch Linux and started X by doing startx and then gnome-session.

EDIT please use smaller images thanks :-)

If you want to start gnome from the console edit/create the ~/.xinitrc file in your home area so it reads:
# .xinitrc
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
The ~/.xinitrc file is read by startx to tell it what window manager/environment to start.

B or Allan're going to come by pretty soon saying no large screenshots, you should use a thumbnail and then link, and also probably to watch your language. You should also look into directions for getting anti-aliasing working on LCD screens.

Hello awwent!
Which kernel/driver/X do you use ? Is there any related information in log files, xorg, syslog, errorlog ? Did you try with other WM too ?

It seems that the window manager twm is running toghether with gnome.. I suggest you to install a graphical login manager and use it to start your gnome session
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Add … on_startup
gdm is the right choice if you prefer GNOME

Personally I think that looks sweet! Something I haven't seen before.
How did you do it?

I'm pretty sure this is a simple 'read the wiki' solution.

It is the default TWM window manager X uses if it is not explicitely instructed to use another one.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

This is bizarre! If you open a terminal and type 'metacity --replace &' what does it print? Does it fix the problem?
