ArchLinux/PPC

i recently been messing with Pacman and the ABS tree using a Debian/Sarge install on my G3 Mac just to see how far i could go. smile

i built pacman manually using the 2.9.4 release sources which were also linked by current/base/pacman/PKGBUILD. problem here is that the internal MD5 code seems not to work correctly and always calculates wrong MD5sums which make Pacman bail out on that error. this is an issue caused by the PPC's big endianess i guess.
if i comment the md5sums in my PKGBUILD, it warns me but continues to work just fine (some PKGBUILDS still need modification of course) and it succeeds to build most things in current/base. i'm more the hacking admin than a experienced low-level C programmer, so if someone is interested in PPC packages as well and would be so kind and give me a hand here, i would greatly apreciate it. wink

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

too bad noone seems to be interested in this... roll

i'll report my status anyway:

i fixed the pacman issue by first compiling GCC & glibc using the PKGBUILD in ABS, now it seems to work  just fine.
after i've finished to compile about half of the packages in current/base i setup a seperate CVS tree since i've made changes here and there (mostly removing patches) and am now looking into where and how oi would host a current repo for ppc available later on.
anyone could give me a hint on where to look for that kind of information?

anyhow, i already have a working enviroment i can chroot into with some basic stuff like bash, coreutils, vim, perl etc. all these packages where compiled optimized for G3 (750) processors using the -mcpu flag, so they should work on later models as well.
if anybody feel adventuresome he/she should feel free to contact me. big_smile

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

hey, it's me again.

after a short talk with Xentac on irc i heard about this nice piece of software called pacbuild. i guess i look into that in a while as it's still to early to think about any automization.

KalephOne wrote:

i really could use some help tho, at least someone i can push some compile-jobs to since i only have a distcc cluster of 4 lowend G3 macs all 300Mhz or lower. today i've started to worry about X.org being the next huge leap to solve the dependendcy hell of the rest. as you may know most X dependend stuff is fairly big and needs lots of CPU time... i sincerely don't know how to handle extra all by myself. heh

help...

my choice for a desktop apple would probably be this one:
http://www.apple.com/chde/macmini/specs.html

and since that's not really what you want (699CHF) you may try it here:
http://promo.euro.apple.com/promo/refurb/de/
i don't know if it works for customers outside of germany though.

oh, here's a hint:
if you're going to buy a second hand mac, ask if it is a new world mac (some G3s or later models). if not, you most probably will run into trouble to get a bootloader working.  even worse, most - if not all - olworld macs are not able to boot from cdrom. so the only choice is to boot 2.2 since that still fits onto a floppy with all drivers builtin needed to drive the mac.

you could probably score a g3 tower off ebay for cheap (300 canadian or less).

If I was willing to run linux on my macs i would help out but I don't want to. Sorry.

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

alright, i still haven't succeded to compile X.org. usually i just head over to the debian mirrors and look at how they're doing it and this helps in most cases. but as they don't have X.org at all in their distro yet it's a pain...
nothing else seems to be on the web that could give hints. anyhow, the default source just won't compile on ppc, no matter what i do.

still, by the time i write this message i already begun setting up a public CVS to host the ABS tree for current (and unfinished extra). i hope it'll be done by the end of tomorrow at latest.
unfortunately i cannot host any binaries that are known to work since i have *very* limited upstream bandwidth (only ~16K/s which i share w/ 2 other roommates). i hope i can still motivate some others to help here and there.

when current is complete (including all X stuff) i will start to think about how to modify the installer to work on ppc. hope that happens by the end of the month.

thanx for the reply! i must say, that i really started to like the concept of minimac! however, it comes with not enough RAM for my uses and upgrade is too expensive ... (i can handle ~700CHF for it but then not for the additional RAM to go to 768MB :-( )

the refurbished site is empty atm, so i0m waiting and looking for alternatives ...

good luck with xorg ... if i run over a cheap mac, i will join your archmac project ;-)

the upgrade to at least half a gig should be fairly easy even without apple's help. i don't know how many slots are there in the mini but from the looks of it it supports ordinary DD Rams like widely used in later i686 machines as well. smile

btw, just in case you want to know with what i need to get by with atm:

Main machine:

Power Macintosh Server G3
PowerPC G3 Gossamer (750) @ 300Mhz
384MB SDRAM
4GB SCSI HDD + 12GB IDE HDD
Apple ATI onboard GFX chipset (VGA incompatible)

the other three:

Power Macintosh Desktop G3
PowerPC G3 Gossamer (750) @ 233Mhz
96MB SDRAM
4GB SCSI HDD
Apple ATI onboard GFX chipset (VGA incompatible)

so you see these are painfully slow for compiles. even though i use distcc it's a taking an awful amount of time to get things done. some huge packages can't even be compiled with MAKEFLAGS set to -j2 or higher, so the compile needs to be done on a single machine. that includes glibc, gcc, X.org (as far as i know) and a few others.

for now it seems i got X.org to compile properly by downloading src6 and 7 as well. i should have tried that earlier silly me. wink

the thing is ... if it has only one slot and i must upgrade it, i have to spend another 400CHF for RAM, what will make 1100CHF :-( ... also the maximum of 1gb ram is not really cool nowadays

btw: are there running costs for mac software (are the upgrades/bugfixes free?)

if i just buy a mac to play with it and not to do also things for the uni (where i need much ram+swap), then a cheap mac will be ok, too ...

i searched here:
http://www.annonces-mac.net/v2/
http://www.macmusic.org/ads/cat.php/lang/FR/id/6017/
http://www.2eme-generation.com/liste.php?cat=ma
but they are too expensive for now

and yet another pile of packages, this time including some window managers! smile
(in order of apearance)

gtk-1.2.10-4.pkg.tar.gz

x2x-1.27-3.pkg.tar.gz
xapps-20040920-1.pkg.tar.gz

btw, i would have liked to build python earlier but that was not possible because it somehow depends on X indirectly. it is due to the TK/TCL bindings in the default source but even though i would suggest to outsource this as an addon. for example i need mod_python on a webserver, am i really supposed to install x.org along with it?  :?
besides that, aren't TK/TCL somewhat obsolete yet? (no, i'm seriously asking a question. i do not intend to start a flame war! big_smile)

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

first of why look at Debian for your help? Debian is really slow at adding stuff to their repos you would be way better off looking at the build for the Crux PPC project (you may have to email the maintainer of the project) or Gentoo.

Second .... and this is for dp.... I told you dp that you should be able to get a cheap loaded G3 tower via ebay or another auction house. Here most G3 towers that are loaded to the hilt will sell for just between 150 to 250 Canadian dollars.  ... but I guess you are just not interested in spending what you want tongue

you made a good point there. i already started to look at CRUX since it was one of the inspirations for Arch after all, wasn't it?
why i looked at how Debian handled things was just because i ran it on my oldworld macs fro quite some time now and never experienced any platform specific problems (only apt/dpkg breaking stuff every now and then).

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

the build for CRUX are very similar and if the maintainer of the PPC project there doesn't mind sharing his builds you could probably do things really quick. He might be able to give you many many suggestions for all sort of things.

He is so anti proprietary software he would probably fall over himself trying to help you out smile

i don't trust ebay. maybe because of no experience, but the concept of paying in advance and then trusting that the other party really sends the thing to you looks risky to me

EDIT: i compared ebay.de and ebay.ch and must say, that in germany, there are much better systems for less money available ... e.g. g4 (500mhz) with 1gb ram for ~300euro is not bad ... but ebay is too risky

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

today's results:

1) added system to ArchStats

SystemREF: 1A9B0A2E2F42AB2B577BEF1A66B9288F

i cheated my way in for now. all i need to say is that the md5sum of the of archstats binary is used to authenticate ^^ as soon as i have a proper patch in my hands i'll let the authors know. yes, there's more than just that. needed to trick archstats into using a different /proc/cpuinfo structure aso.

2) new packages:

xfce-3.8.18-3.pkg.tar.gz
lesstif-0.93.97-1.pkg.tar.gz
xlockmore-5.13-1.pkg.tar.gz
intltool-0.32.1-1.pkg.tar.gz

gvim-6.3-4.pkg.tar.gz
archstats-3.8-1.pkg.tar.gz
filesystem-0.7-1.pkg.tar.gz

not too many for today, i know.

3) i really do need help now. i can't test X.org since it doesn't like my onboard ATI Rage Pro PCI card and leaves the system in an unusable state after trying to start X. only thing left to do then is rebooting the system via remote login. i badly need a Apple2VGA adaptor, my rotten old !single sync! 14" Macintosh Color Display is probably at fault (its the only one i have that's compatible to my all of macs)

after i've finished to compile about half of the packages in current/base i setup a seperate CVS tree since i've made changes here and there (mostly removing patches) and am now looking into where and how oi would host a current repo for ppc available later on.

If you want, you can use the gnu arch current repo that I'm mirroring from CVS.  Then your changes could eventually get into current.

We'd have to talk about actual migration options, but it's probably better than trying to sync your own cvs repo.

This is one area that gnu arch is really nice.

Second .... and this is for dp.... I told you dp that you should be able to get a cheap loaded G3 tower via ebay or another auction house. Here most G3 towers that are loaded to the hilt will sell for just between 150 to 250 Canadian dollars.  ... but I guess you are just not interested in spending what you want tongue

i don't trust ebay. maybe because of no experience, but the concept of paying in advance and then trusting that the other party really sends the thing to you looks risky to me

EDIT: i compared ebay.de and ebay.ch and must say, that in germany, there are much better systems for less money available ... e.g. g4 (500mhz) with 1gb ram for ~300euro is not bad ... but ebay is too risky

I have spent thousands of dollars on ebay.  I have ordered thousands of dollars worth of stuff both online and off.  Not once has anyone not sent me what I ordered.  The whole trick is to NOT pay by a insecure method such as cash and do not deal with anyone that will not refund your money.

I have done both buying and selling on ebay.

But hey that is okay. You should know that you are ALWAYS buying before you get something anyway and just because you can physically see something and hold it does not mean you are getting what you paid for. Just look at how many people get ripped off at stores every year.

In fact if you just do a little research you will find that most stores are robbing you blind.  Try this, for example, call around to your local audio stores and see how much it will cost you to replace a remote from a Pioneer VSX-D712 A/V Receiver.  I can tell you for certain that it is just over $34 dollars directly from the US parts facility and $53.15 plus $12 shipping in Canada (and I have to pay first and "trust" them to ship it as with any replacement part).

Of course I am not saying blindly trust something like ebay. But don't think that it is just full of cheats. i would guess that 90-98% of the people out there will not rip you off.

(BTW I ordered $2500 dollars (CDN) of comics from a legitimate store this year and had to return two because they were not in the condition claimed. Five other were not really either but they were in good enough condition that I would have little trouble reclaiming the cash upon resale of them.  I also bought an iPod from apple last year and had to replace it eventually because it was defective. Oh and I can't think of how many times I paid for something at the store and it ended out being a pile of crap.)

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

It never hurts to be cautious though dp.  Read feedback carefully and if you have any worries or question email the buyer or talk to people that have dealt with the buyer. You can even talk to me I know alot of the tricks some of these people use. I have a few rules though when I am on ebay:

1. Never exceed $250 CDN (I rarely get this high at all most of the time I spend under $75)
2. Budget. Never let impluse buying get you.
3. Stay away from private auctions
4. Be wary of auctions with no images or who only accept snail mail payments (Money Orders or Cheques)

I have bought Comics, CDs, books and an old laptop. I have been disappointed with only maybe 10 of the nearly 200 auctions I have won. The most I ever spent was $282 (exchange put me over my limit but I was buying from a reputable dealer) on three comics and $225 on a rare CD (Don't be shocked other versions of the this disc have sold for over $700 US).

You can always request insurance and there are all sorts of protections on Money Orders, PayPal (if available) and Credit card payments (actually paying with a credit card is often the safest with respect to recovering funds). Ebay has contract terms that should protect you as well (though I would not like to have it come down to them protecting you as they are just in it for the money so I feel they are more protective of sellers than they are of buyers. but people have successfully recovered lost funds via Ebay terms).

Anyway. I am not saying use it but I don't think you should be too untrusting of it. Take it slow and spend or sell wisely.

PM or email me if you like.

Re: ArchLinux/PPC

i haven't had much time lately so only a short update of what i got working this time:

glut-3.7-4.pkg.tar.gz
qt-3.3.3-3.pkg.tar.gz
fam-2.7.0-3.pkg.tar.gz
startup-notification-0.7-1.pkg.tar.gz
libao-0.8.5-1.pkg.tar.gz
libvorbis-1.1.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
aspell-0.60-4.pkg.tar.gz
gtk2-2.6.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
gtkspell-2.0.7-1.pkg.tar.gz
libtasn1-0.2.13-1.pkg.tar.gz
opencdk-0.5.5-1.pkg.tar.gz
gnutls-1.0.23-1.pkg.tar.gz
gaim-1.1.1-1.pkg.tar.gz (*)
xchat-2.4.1-2.pkg.tar.gz
ethereal-0.10.8-1.pkg.tar.gz
gftp-2.0.18rc1-2.pkg.tar.gz
apmd-3.0.2-4.pkg.tar.gz
exim-4.43-1.pkg.tar.gz
nfs-utils-1.0.6-2.pkg.tar.gz

(*) issues with pango on runtime that need to be solved, it compiles cleanly though

packages that i came across that will probably never work on PPC:

cvsup

last but not least some stuff in extra:

indent-2.2.9-1.pkg.tar.gz
hwd-4.1.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
xfree86-4.4.0-4.pkg.tar.gz (*)

(*) seems to let my ATI gfx work when no XF86Config exists (640x480-8bpp) unlike X.org.

still no public accessable ABS... i know, i'm still considerreing all options i have.
i hope to get my hands on a Mac Mini at the beginning of next month so progress will speed up a bit.
