X crash my monitor the second time I startx.

Hello,
I'm new to Arch and just did a fresh install.
I installed xorg and some daemons.

I kept my old xorg.conf from Ubuntu.

So, when I startx for the first time (as root or either as user), X is starting just fine. (I tried with differents WM and DE and without any)

Now if i'm killing X and come back to console and if I try to startx again then my monitor just shutdown and I need to manually reboot. (cant get back to console)

I also tried to start in runlevel 5 with gdm and when I logout to go back to the login screen the same problem occur , monitor off.

Here is my rc.conf:

my xorg.conf:
http://pastebin.com/m4aac25c8

and my Xorg log:
http://pastebin.com/m56f1930d

Thanks.

Re: X crash my monitor the second time I startx.

I investigated further on that problem but still cant determine what it is really.

First I tried the nv driver instead of nvidia one , and this time the monitor crash as soon as I leave X. (no possible way to get console back, need to reset computer)

Also, on gnome if I logout to the login screen (gdm) it crashs. But if I suspended/resumed the session before logging out it wont crash and wont crash ever. (seams suspending/resuming session fix the issue)

edit:

new test with nv driver on gnome, in this case monitor is not turned off when logging out.
If I suspend session , monitor is off on resume (need to reboot).
When I go to console with Ctrl + Alt + F1 it does turn off monitor , but I can go back to X with Ctrl + Alt + F7.
(with nvidia driver I have access to consoles)

edit2:

looking at the logs after switching to console (ctrl + alt + F1) I noticed a difference in daemon.log between nv (which turn off montior) and nvidia (which work).

for nv it says:

Sep 8 12:34:04 cat acpid: client 1497[0:0] has disconnected
Sep 8 12:34:04 cat acpid: client connected from 1497[0:0]
Sep 8 12:34:04 cat acpid: 1 client rule loaded

while for nvidia it seams to do the same thing twice:

Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: client 2063[0:0] has disconnected
Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: client 2063[0:0] has disconnected
Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: client connected from 2063[0:0]
Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: 1 client rule loaded
Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: client connected from 2063[0:0]
Sep 8 13:30:35 cat acpid: 1 client rule loaded

Re: X crash my monitor the second time I startx.

I found out where the problem was, but I cant solve it.
It looks like a problem between the latest xorg and my hardware setup.

I have 2 GPU: onboard one (abit AN-M2) + PCIe card (Geforce 8600GT).
I never used the onboard GPU so I just set the bios to PCIe (but this does not deactivate the onboard one).

So I removed my PCIe card and plugged my monitor to the onboard GPU.
Configured bios for onboard use.
And now xorg works as expected.

I have to say that the same setup worked with Ubuntu 9.04 without any problem, which has an older xorg.

Maybe someone can provide an older xorg package for me so I can try ?

Thanks.

Re: X crash my monitor the second time I startx.

Report of the day smile

I looked for the patches installed with xorg-server on Ubuntu 9.04 and found one related to my problem :
http://hickop.free.fr/primary-pci-video-device.patch

I compiled xorg-server 1.6.3.901 with Arch patches (http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/x … ra-x86_64/) and this one.

This fixed the issue with nv driver.
Latest nvidia still has the same issues.
Nvidia-173xx works on both xorg-server (patched and not).

Made this table as a summary :
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= … utput=html

Need to find out why latest nvidia wont work like the others smile

edit:
nvidia-beta (190.32) are working.
