I'm a big fan of the CLI replacement for Photoshop, pixel-edit.

knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)

Re: Why this fascination with terminal applications?

They are faster, easy, light and a lot more cooler than gui ones tongue.

They also are more practical. Example:
Music Players. You are LISTENING music,so theres not really a need for a gui tongue.
Or with Mplayer ''mplayer ~/porn.avi" is a lot easier than opening a gui tongue.

Well,thats what i think.

Thanks and greetings.

Re: Why this fascination with terminal applications?

I honestly don't get it either why anyone with a fairly modern setup would want it to look like something from 1970s big_smile

Then again if you look at the artwork section, there's a lot of talented users with very nicely desktop interfaces using DE or just WM, but it takes too much time for me.

Using a 1970 (you know what I mean) "look" on a modern pc is a waste of money in my opinion

Give me kde and i'm happy smile

That doesn't mean i'm not using CLI, in fact all of my configs/irc/various applications are through terminal only. I prefer the CLI way for apps/configs vs a GUI, easier in my opinion.

This is one of the few things you should still keep separated and no unity in my opinion, having a lot of DE/WM to pick from is a very powerful option for an OS!

EDIT: Looks like a few users are using it for their work, sure it's a nice way not to get destracted i guess if your desktop isn't filled with easy porno access, facebook etc.

For me, it's terribly easy 2-5 buttons on a mouse, over 100 on a keyboard. Using keyboard is just faster for me, than trying to point everything with a mouse.

In my opinion, using KDE on a modern PC is a waste of CPU cycles.  My computer positively smokes with the combination I have on it now (uzbl/wmii/urxvt, when not in console).  When I have to use a DE, even on computers with significantly better specs than mine, I am perpetually bewildered by how long things take to load.  Even Firefox, which used to be one of the most reliably responsive apps I used, is sluggish in comparison.  I didn't buy a computer to show off flashy eye candy -- if I had, I certainly wouldn't have bought a Thinkpad smile

May I recommend dvtm? Its a tiling wm for the terminal, Combine this with GNU screen and you get a tiling wm with workspaces. After that you don't even need X anymore if you just use terminal programs! Now when you ssh into your box, its basically complete remote access. wink

Except for that. Then again there are framebuffer graphical browsers such as links -g.

Re: Why this fascination with terminal applications?

It's silly to think one excludes the other though....I use a mixture of GUI and CLI apps, depending on mood, task etc.

For example, if you already have your mouse in hand, it's easier to click on sonata to change a song or smth, but if you're typing then starting ncmpcpp is easier.

Exactly what I mean. Do what best solves your task at hand.

When I started my linux journey some years ago I only had kde 3 at hand. It was an easy transition from windows that time. But it became increasingly awkward with time. Thus I learned to use CLI and then love it. Now my system is Openbox (was IceWM for a long time) and GUI applications are just a nice additon to CLI ones.

I have the feeling, this discussion leeds to nowhere. Everything has been said. We could as well close it now. tongue

No, no. You've got it backwards. Running bloated software makes your 2009 computer run no better than a 1970 computer.

Quite!
My 2 MHz 8080 Computer of ca. 1980..1984 was then able to run WordPerfect faster than OpenOffice Writer just a few years ago.

And I could do almost anything I wanted then.

When Windows came up a friend of mine predicted it would need several magnitudes of speed improvements to be able to work nearly as fast. Boy, was he right! tongue

I see, well it's always down to a personal preference. Yeah firefox lost it's "quickness" years ago, even opera who used to be very fast is falling behind compared to safari/google chrome.

big_smile

Sorry I don't agree and bloated is just an opinion. Windows 7/macosx leopard runs "bloated" software very fast on modern rigs, keyword here is "modern". Modern rig to me is something that's less than 5 years old. Right now i'm running kde4.3 on my 6 months old sony vaio and sure it's nice eye candy but i'm tired of the bugs and the slowdowns, but i'm pretty sure my ****** ATI card is the one to blame in this case. And that my friend is one of linux strong points, you can run the linux kernel on "old" computers nothing is a waste and still make it look damn nice (eye candy) or run a server/router/proxy etc.

Re: Why this fascination with terminal applications?

For me its simple, I'm 17, and thus 'work' rarely takes priority on my computer (though it kinda should). I'm your typical social networking, multimedia and entertainment kinda guy. I live in the digital age. And KDE 4.3 perfects this for me. And it looks good doing it. Looks matter to me smile. And no, text (sometimes non anti-aliased hmm) on a dark background IMO don't look good. It's boring and unattractive. I'll give you points for productivity, but I just don't do that enough to justify that extreme.

Though I do still have an underlying interest for computers and linux, and how it all works. Hence I use Arch and extensively tweak and play around using the console. And I still have a love for minimalism, which now sort of translates to simplicity.

As for looking good with a hackerish type desktop I'd be dubbed an instant nerd and snubbed in society, I do have an image to uphold wink

Re: Why this fascination with terminal applications?

I'm relatively new to GNU/Linux and starting with the CLI appeared to be the logical choice to start learning. I use it now because it feels more efficient and familiar. Plus I want to order pizzas!
