do tar.gz archives have parity? what if they reside on badblocks?

Does anyone know if my archive files (tar.gz format) has built in parity in case a large tar.gz file resides on a file system with badblocks?  Not such as concern on HDDs, but certainly a concern on DVD backups.  Back when I ran windows/rarwin, I could specify that the rar archive be padded with 'recovery records' which allowed for fault tolerance.

Thanks for the info.

Not afaik. The common way to chech the integrity is to use md5/sha1sums instead.

In other words, you can get fault detection but not fault tolerance..?

Good to know... is there a Linux native format for backups that does incorporate fault tolerance much like the rar format allows for parity or recovery records?
