Hi,
Installed Arch for the first time the other day, pretty impressed with it so far, except that I can't get X to work . When I do startx the VMware window resizes itself (as it should), but all I get is a black screen with no keyboard/mouse. The only way to get out of this is to reboot from ssh. Tried both with and without a xorg.conf (generated with Xorg -configure)

Try this first:
Uncomment this line in your xorg.conf:
# Option "AutoAddDevices" "True"
and change it from True to False.

Made the change, same problem
[root@arch ~]# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

What are you executing in your .xinitrc? Have you tried the basic test where you just 'exec xterm' to make sure that comes up?
Offline
I actually didnt have any .xinitrc files. Copied the default from /etc/skel into my users directory and added 'exec xterm' while leaving everything else commented out:
[root@arch ~]# cat /home/md/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
exec xterm
Same problem

Hmm. I have a VM with Arch at work (VMWare Workstation on Vista) that is working fine so if you don't get it working today I can give you my xorg.conf tomorrow so you can try it.
Offline
I'm running VMware Workstation on Windows 7 RC 64bit, and 64bit guest (chose Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64bit).
Thanks for the help. I'll have a play with it again tomorrow after work (it's getting late here).

Still have the same problem, can you post that xorg.conf please.

Here you go. My Arch guest is 32-bit, not sure if that has any relevance. You may need to change the resolution under the Modes section.

Resurrecting the thread, as I'm having the same problem and didn't see that this had be definitively resolved.
I'm running 32-bit Arch Linux (2.6.31) under VMWare Workstation 6.5.3. Attempting to start X results in a black screen and no activity after a few seconds. I have tried both the sample configuration posted above (by neddie_seagoon), as well as one auto-configured by X.
Resulting xorg.log.0:
This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

I'm having the same problem-- various incarnations of xorg.conf have no effect.
I'm using VMWare Fusion 3.0.0. The install worked beautifully, network connects with no problem, but anything x-related (even X -configure) gives a black screen, and the only way out is to restart the VM. Google searching seems to say it's solved by correctly configuring xorg.conf, but I can't find a configuration that works at all...
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
both are empty.
Does anyone have any more insight to this?

Same on my host. I am running VMware Server 2.0. When starting X the screen turns black and nothing more can be done on the virtual machine. When connecting via ssh to the virtual machine, i find no X running at all.
When i comment out hal and try to start X, the windows are rendered and mouspoint shows. But mouse and keyboard are not working. I thought it may have been due to open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-modules and a new kernel version, but i couldn't verify this.

Works again on my site. Can only guess what was causing the problem:
- Dbus and Hal needs to be running
- Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false" (i think false needs to be 'False')
- hal seems to use the evdev driver (xf86-input-evdev)
- Made an pacman -Syu today and updated: xorg-server, xf86-input-vmmouse)
