I can't seem to get the sound working on this laptop. I've installed alsa-lib,alsa-utils and alsa-oss. I've added alsa to my list of daemons. That went perfectly well.
here is my lspci (I've underlined the audio device)

So there is an audio device. Following the wiki I try ls -l /sys/module/snd/holders but all I get is:
sh-4.0$ ls -l /sys/module/snd/holders
ls: cannot access /sys/module/snd/holders: No such file or directory
The same happens when trying ls -l /dev/snd
I'm missing something but I don't know what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you run alsaconf?
Also, you will probably want to add your users to the audio group.

It might be possible that hes having an audio issue because hes using snd_hda_intel and not legacy. I know on my ubuntu box I had an issue with the hda intel sound.. run Dmesg and look for the audio portion see if its loading properly.. you could be having an issue with your modules.

The module doesn't show up on dmesg. I followed the instructions on alsa-project.org (up to the part about installing alsa-utils and alsa-lib because they are already installed) but it doesn't seem to work.
bash-4.0# chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi
chmod: cannot access `/dev/dsp': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/dev/mixer': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/dev/sequencer': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/dev/midi': No such file or directory
bash-4.0# modprobe snd-card-hda-intel
FATAL: Module snd_card_hda_intel not found.
bash-4.0# ls -l /sys/module/snd/holders
ls: cannot access /sys/module/snd/holders: No such file or directory

A. The module is called snd_hda_intel.
B. I suggest you follow the Arch Wiki instructions rather than the generic (and often outdated) docs on the Alsa site.

You were right about the module name but of course, Murphy's Law still applies. Still no luck.

Dmesg gives me the following.
snd: Unknown parameter `pcsp'

I am having the exact same problem and nothing seems to help. I am using an Acer AspireOne laptop (AOA150).

I have solved the issue. Thanks to hw-tph's initial post. The pcsp was just a stupid user error. I added options snd-pcsp index=2 to the modprobe.conf but forgot the dash. After fixing that, I ran alsaconf which might have taken care of it but to be sure, I aslo ran modprobe snd-hda-intel.
After that, its simply a question of unmuting the sound and choosing the sound device, all through alsamixer.
Thanks for the help guys.
Oh, should I mark this as solved or leave it until Dazealex's issues are resolved?

This can be marked as solved. What my problem was that I had followed a Wiki specific to the Acer AspireOne which had incorrect information. So I basically removed all sound related modules from rc.conf, and it all started working.
I am a happy camper now.
