No, this is not that simple as the guide in the first post.
You need to install a new kernel. Look at flamelab's post.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

So, does anyone have OpenGL anything working? Whenever I start anything that relies on OpenGL (Sauerbraten, Neverball, Blender), it just slows my system down, and makes everything unclickable. I can still move my mouse, and sound still goes, but the desktop doesn't update other than the mouse position. Any tips?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

i've installed all the necessary package for getting 3d on my radeon 4850 and opengl is working perfectly.
anyway I still get
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

in glxinfo. is this normal?
here's the whole output of glxinfo:

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Was anyone able to hear HDMI sound using xf86-video-ati-git (no problems with xf86-video-radeonhd-git)?

The HD4xxx Radeons are R7xx. So your card is an R6xx.

I installed the kms-kernel again a few minutes ago: no crashes, compiz is running fine with no artefacts. cool

/edit: compiz is running with direct-rendering  big_smile

Hmm, I just did the same.  KMS+Composite works, but I still get some artefacts in the desktop (wallpaper) and some widgets in the applications.  This is using KWin 4.3.1 with composite enabled...

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

It will be great if some expert can make a repo with KMS kernel + ATI GIT+ All deps which refreshes every day like KDE subversion repo it will be great.

I am trying out fedora rawhide but it has too many unstable packages along with ati 3D

Thanks

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

yep, that would be so nice, I don't want to rebuild my packages each day on my own smile

for KMS/dri2 you can't basically just use kernel26-kms from aur, you have to change some things though, apart from the md5 check sums this would be:

add _patchname="patch-2.6.31-1-ARCH" to the variables

for sources change ARCH-patches to ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/ … hname}.bz2

git checkout --track -b drm-rawhide origin/drm-rawhide ->
git checkout --track -b drm-r600-sr origin/drm-r600-sr

and change the patch -Np1 (...) part to
  patch -Np1 -i ${srcdir}/${_patchname} || return 1

while compiling you have to set some config, don't forget to enable radeon-kms by default if you want to

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I'm sorry to interrupt the usefullness of this thread, but i simply have to say thanks to perry3d for writing the tutorial and maintaining the packages in AUR.
The HowTo worked like a charme and i got the open drivers working without seeing too many error messages wink

P.S: I'm quite impressed of what those drivers may do even in their present state. Movies run smoother than with catalyst and the games i tested so far (extremetuxracer, supertuxkart, wormux and UrbanTerror) all worked without noticeable corruption and at reasonable speeds.

xf86-video-ati will be gone in the future as well wink The plan is to have just mesa + kernel and have full 3D acceleration with KMS support.

What is happening and is going to happen:

1) Kernel mode setting on <R500 (Linux Kernel 2.6.31/Mesa 7.6) : DONE
2) Κernel mode setting and 3D on >R500 (Linux Kernel 2.6.32 / Mesa  7.7) : Done by January 2010

(and in the future)

3) 2D support for  R8xx (still no specifications) : Maybe March 2010
4) 3D support for R600/R700 ) (it's going to happen in .32) : By January 2010
5) Hardware calls through KMS and AtomBIOS : By March or maybe January 2010
6) Powersaving through KMS and on the fly switching on/off (there are patches waiting for going on drm-2.6) : By March/April/May we are gonna have sufficient powersaving through KMS for <R5xx
7) Gallium3D 3d/networking integration (no idea how it's going to happen)
8) Leaving support for radeon and radeonhd, and have 3D without them. I don't know how it's going to happen, but it's underway. : Maybe by the end of 2010, or by the first months of 2011
9) KMS and 3D support για R8xx: By the end of 2010, or earlier if the code is not gonna be so much different.

Note: Except for 1 and 2, all the other dates are personal estimations.

Noticing a few small artifacts on KDE but overall it's working great. What difference would I notice from getting KMS working aswell? (never really understood what it does apart from being able to run things like plymouth)
